Dear Science/Mathematics/Humanities Teacher:
The University of Mississippi has again been selected by The Academy of Applied Science to host the Mississippi Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Approximately 3,294 students and 1,139 teachers have attended the past 31 symposia. This Symposium is designed as an enrichment program for select high school students demonstrating exceptional interest and aptitude in science and scientific technology. The 32nd Mississippi Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium will be held on the Oxford Campus, March 16-18, 2003. Major symposium activities will include addresses by prominent scientists and humanists, presentation of research papers by high school students, career emphasis sessions, and a variety of specialized programs conducted by the University's engineering, pharmacy, science, and humanities departments. As you may be aware, each school year we invite students and teachers representing the science and mathematics departments of their schools to participate in the program. Teachers who are interested in participating and in having their students participate are asked to recommend to their principals for approval the nomination of no more than three (3) students enrolled in grades 9-12 and one (1) teacher from each school to attend the symposium. Those selected will be guests of The University of Mississippi. Meals and lodging will be provided at no cost to the participants. Approximately 120 students and 40 teachers will be selected to attend the 2003 Symposium. Only one set of nominees should be submitted from each school. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed JSHS on the NASSP Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2002-2003.

Career Outlook
Afro-American Studies at The University of Mississippi began in 1970 and now operates with departmental status. The departmental name was changed in 1983 to the Afro-American Studies Program, in part to signal that a new direction had been taken in terms of professional standards. The Afro-American Studies Program develops and coordinates and interdisciplinary program that focuses mainly ont he African-American experience in the United States, especially in Mississippi and the South. Its objectives are to encourage all students and faculty to examine the African-American experience, to facilitate a cultural and intellectual atmosphere on campus that will be favorable to such studies, and to develop a program of research and community service. Afro-American Studies at Ole Miss is a growing endeavor. We hope you will join in the excitement created by the interdisciplinary focus we bring to the University. Our future and your future will be much brighter when you do.
Educational Preperation
Preparation for any liberal arts program begins with a solid high school background. Take more English, speech, history, and mathematics if you can.

January 09, 2003 Lieutenant Governor Tuck, Speaker Ford, President Pro Tem Little, Speaker Pro Tem Clark. Elected officials and distinguished guests, my fellow Mississippians. We meet in troubled economic times. Like every other state in the nation, we are suffering from a national recession that is draining our resources. We must understand the economic realities of the day, and be realistic about our responsibilities. Every day we see more evidence of the magnitude of this problem. The stock market has lost $7 trillion, and more than a million Americans have lost their jobs. The persistent national recession is causing major budget shortfalls in almost every state. Drastic measures are being taken. Schools in eight states, including Arkansas and Louisiana, are cutting back to a four-day week.

    December 26, 2002
State lawmakers launched a sweeping initiative Thursday to link higher education institutions to economic development projects over 20 years, but they could not say how much it would cost or how it would be funded. By: Julie Goodman Jackson Clarion Ledger Jackson, MS http://www.clarionledger.com The plan, spanning from 2005 to 2025, involves using the state's universities and community colleges to recruit better professionals, improve academics and research, and strengthen work force and vocational training. Lawmakers presented the plan at the Capitol before about 40 representatives from universities, community colleges and state agencies. "A simple plan that, in a most demonstrative way, links higher education to our developing agencies to the future of Mississippi's economy. That's what we're here for," House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Billy McCoy told the group. Although state agencies and higher education institutions already collaborate, lawmakers said it has been piecemeal in the past.
