Pushmataha
The name "Choctaw" means a "charming voice." At the beginning of the historic period, the tribe was found in Mississippi and Alabama. Their language was the trade medium throughout the southern region after the coming of the Europeans. Choctaws are well proportioned and medium in height, tending to be heavy in maturity. Their tribal characteristics were patience, diplomacy, artistic in nature and great strength in defensive warfare. Emotional display was altogether foreign to the Choctaws, who were formal and reserved. Aristocracy was the aristocracy of character rather than of birth or social position. They were the preeminent agriculturists among the Southeastern tribes.
Pushmataha was born in Mississippi in 1764. He was a fine young warrior and had many adventures hunting game and fighting the plains Indians west of the Mississippi River. He knew the country well. His name literally means "one whose tomahawk is fatal in war or hunting."
Pushmataha had achieved leadership through wisdom and foresight; wisdom in dealing with his own people, foresight in making an alliance with the ever growing power of the United States. The alliance with the United States brought the Choctaws into the war with the Creek Nation and the War of 1812. Their aid to General Jackson became a real contribution. During these wars, he was made General Pushmataha of the United States Army. He was recognized as a true friend of the American people and a friend of General Andrew Jackson.

Up close and personal! MORA provides donor programs and information for schools, including visits with transplant recipeints and donor family members. The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency is the federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO) for the majority of the state of Mississippi. MORA is one of 62 organ procurement organizations nationally. The federal government requires hospitals to have policies and proceedures in place to insure that each family is given the opportunity to donate organs and tissue upon the death of a loved one. MORA works with the local hospitals in a designated service area to ensure that families receive the option of organ and tissue donation. It is only after the death of a loved one that MORA becomes involved. After a physician has determined that a patient is brain dead, MORA is called in to talk to the family, offer the option of donation and answer any questions. If the family consents to donation, MORA then coordinates the recovery of the human organs for transplantation. A MORA staff member stays at the hospital, managing the donor and making phone calls to transplant centers to place the organs with matching recipients. MORA staff members are on call 24-hours a day in order to respond to the needs of hospitals at any time. MORA is also is the source of organ and tissue donor information for the state. Our agency promotes donor education in many ways - at medical conventions, civic meetings, community events, health fairs, schools and churches. MORA provides brochures and information on donation free of charge to anyone who makes a request.

    http://www.msbar.org/section.htm
    Sections of the Mississippi Bar
Sections of The Mississippi Bar are separate groups having special interests in particular substantive areas of practice. Sections function under Bylaws approved by the Board of Commissioners of The Mississippi Bar and broad policy guidelines also established by the Board of Commissioners.
"The Commissioners may create a Section of the Bar at any time. Each Section may adopt, amend and repeal Bylaws by a vote of 2/3 of its members present at any meeting thereof. The Bylaws of any Section shall not be in conflict with these Bylaws. The initial Bylaws of the Section shall conform to Model Bylaws approved by the Board of Commissioners, and no amendment thereto shall be affected without approval of the Board of Commissioners." (Bylaws of The Mississippi Bar, Article 8). Membership in all Sections is open to any Bar member in good standing upon payment of the prescribed Section dues. As voluntary, non-appointed groups, Sections elect their own officers and choose their own activities with the limitations established by the Bylaws of the Bar and the Section, as well as general policies established by the Board of Commissioners and the Section Executive Committees.
Sections provide the structure through which all members of the Bar have the opportunity to participate in its work. Sections may be divided into smaller units. For example, committees of Sections may be appointed to undertake particular assignments such as membership, newsletter, legislation, annual meeting program, etc., or practice areas may be further divided within Sections by the establishment of committees. The Executive Committee of each Section should serve to govern and coordinate the work of the Section committees rather than attempt to undertake all Section work.

(Campbell, Clarice T. and Oscar Allen Rogers, Jr., Mississippi: The View from Tougaloo, Jackson, MS: University of Mississippi Press, 1979, p.3). In 1869, the American Missionary Association of New York purchased a plantation of five hundred acres of land near Jackson, Mississippi, and established on it a school for the training of young people "irrespective of religious tenets, and conducted on the most liberal principles for the benefit of our citizens in general." In 1871, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi granted the institution a charter under the name of "Tougaloo University." The Normal Department was recognized as a teacher training school until 1892 when the college ceased to receive aid from the state. Courses for college credit were first offered in 1897, and the first Bachelor of Arts degree was granted in 1901. In 1916, the name of the institution was changed to Tougaloo College.

July 9, 2002 122 Miss. schools on early failing list
  • But offering school choice could be problem By Cathy Hayden
Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer Students in 122 Mississippi schools considered failing under U.S. Department of Education criteria could transfer to better-performing public schools this fall. At least in theory. The list is preliminary and subject to change. Such transfers are dubious in much of Mississippi because there aren't schools nearby to transfer to. And some parents discount the validity of the list, which is based on results of standardized tests. "African-American students don't score as well on standardized tests. One hundred and twenty-two failing schools in Mississippi seems like a lot," said Melodie Upkins, whose son attends Jim Hill High in Jackson, one of the schools on the list. Mississippi Department of Education officials say they won't know how many of the 122 schools will remain on that list until they receive the state's latest test scores from standardized exams given in the spring. Educators will analyze the scores to determine whether any of the schools improved enough to be removed from the list, said Lynn House, director of the office of innovative support in the state Department of Education.

Brief History: Mississippi Valley State University was created by the Mississippi Legislature as Mississippi Vocational College in 1946. The expressed purpose of the Institution was to train teachers for rural and elementary schools and to provide vocational training. The first academic session started in 1950. Under its original name and purpose, the Institution provided higher education opportunities for many first generation college students.
In order to reflect the broadening scope and offerings of the Institution, its name was changed to Mississippi Valley State College in 1964. Under this transition, the Institution became more general purpose in nature while retaining its commitment to provide special higher education opportunities. The name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State University in 1974. Descriptive Information: Mississippi Valley State University is a regional institution responding to the needs of the Delta region of the state of Mississippi for accessible, relevant, and quality undergraduate programs as well as some graduate and public service programs. As a public institution, Mississippi Valley State University receives funds from the Mississippi Legislature and from other sources, including student fees, federal sources, and private gifts and grants. The academic programs of the University offer opportunities for concentrated study in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and professional fields of business, education, special services, and pre professional health services. Enrichment programs and support services enhance the university experience, help students achieve their personal and professional goals, and promote life-long learning.

by AgWeb.com Editors Rural Mississippi schools now lead the nation in having Internet access. In fact, that state has set a milestone by being the first state in the nation to have Internet access wired to every one of its 32,354 public classrooms. That saturation will bring rural school systems global “reach”, unlike any other state. The state met a goal to get each classroom wired by December 31, 2002. The challenge was first presented to state educators in 1999. The idea to hook up all the state's public classrooms to the Internet began in 1999 was first issued as a challenge during a meeting of the Mississippi Economic Council. Ronnie Musgrove, a candidate for governor at the time, picked up the challenge and made it part of his campaign. Musgrove is now Mississippi’s governor. According to the Associated Press, the state next closest to filling classrooms with online computers is Delaware.
