MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 1997 Regular Session To: Education By: Representatives Grist, Henderson (26th), Robertson House Bill 1191 may require tests such as the common and teaching areas of the National Teacher s Examination or an examination of achievement as one of the requirements for the issuance of public school professional certificates issued to any person applying for the first time for a professional certificate. However, after June 30, 1997, the test or tests shall not be required for any teacher seeking initial certification in Mississippi who holds a valid certificate issued by a state that grants certification to teachers previously certified in Mississippi based upon their certification in Mississippi alone, without any additional testing or other requirements being mandated. the test or tests shall be made a part of the record of the applicant and maintained in the files of the office of Teacher Certification Division of the State Department of Education. , in its discretion to make determinations of minimum scores required of a person applying for the first time for a professional certificate who is required under this section to take the test or tests in its discretion

By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
