Mississippi's commitment to education is historic, constantly upgrading the skills of teachers, familiarizing them with the latest national teaching techniques and trends, and maintaining competitive salary levels to keep some of the nation's finest educators in Mississippi.
The state set impressive national examples by introducing the first state-supported school for the handicapped, the first state college for women, the first coeducational college to grant degrees to women, and the oldest land-grant college for black Americans.
Responding in 1987 to a national concern about mathematics and science, the Mississippi Legislature established the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science . MSMS, the nation's fourth oldest school of its kind, is a residential high school for academically able students, and offers a college preparatory curriculum which emphasizes instruction in mathematics and science. In addition, courses in the humanities, computer technology, foreign languages, music, and art are offered to allow students to participate in a well rounded curriculum

Mission Statement
Accreditation / Memberships
Brief History: Mississippi Valley State University was created by the Mississippi Legislature as Mississippi Vocational College in 1946. The expressed purpose of the Institution was to train teachers for rural and elementary schools and to provide vocational training. The first academic session started in 1950. Under its original name and purpose, the Institution provided higher education opportunities for many first generation college students.
In order to reflect the broadening scope and offerings of the Institution, its name was changed to Mississippi Valley State College in 1964. Under this transition, the Institution became more general purpose in nature while retaining its commitment to provide special higher education opportunities. The name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State University in 1974. Descriptive Information: Mississippi Valley State University is a regional institution responding to the needs of the Delta region of the state of Mississippi for accessible, relevant, and quality undergraduate programs as well as some graduate and public service programs. As a public institution, Mississippi Valley State University receives funds from the Mississippi Legislature and from other sources, including student fees, federal sources, and private gifts and grants. The academic programs of the University offer opportunities for concentrated study in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and professional fields of business, education, special services, and pre professional health services. Enrichment programs and support services enhance the university experience, help students achieve their personal and professional goals, and promote life-long learning.

History Location Distance To Area ... Recycling Centers The following information will help you become acquainted with our community.
    History
Natchez, Mississippi, perched 200 feet above the Mississippi River on the highest promontory north of the Gulf of Mexico, is the oldest civilized settlement on the river - older by two years than New Orleans. Inhabited for centuries by prehistoric Indians and later by the Natchez Indians, Natchez was settled first by the French in 1716, later by the British in 1763, the Spanish in 1779, and finally by the Americans in 1798. In 1798, Natchez became the first capital of the Mississippi Territory, and in 1817, became the first capital of the new state of Mississippi. The city boomed in the first half of the 19th century with the exportation of tons of cotton by steamboat - cotton grown on plantations in Mississippi and across the river in the rich Louisiana lowlands. Enormous fortunes were made from the area's natural resources: the land and the river. Cotton was king, money was plentiful and men spent it - particularly on dazzling mansions filled with the finest furnishings money could buy. Today with its tourism, industry and enormous wealth of natural resources - hospitality - Natchez is one of the most desirable small cities in the United States. Residents are proud to have the city included in Hugh Bayless' book, "The 100 Best Towns in America."

A survey of vocational education administrators has revealed that many of them are approaching their date of licensure renewal and are not on track for timely completion of sufficient SEMI credits. The Vocational Administrators Academy is not meant to supplant the well designed SEMI training that will continue to be available to all administrators, but it will provide additional training that will have been designed by the vocational education administrators themselves to meet their special needs. An advisory committee for the purpose of designing the SEMI training is established.
