NASA/Marshall Science Laboratory Director to Address Missouri Science Teachers
February 26, 1998: Science from NASA/Marshall will highlight the annual Missouri State Teachers Interface '98 Conference on February 26, 1998, as Dr. Gregory S. Wilson addresses over 2,000 teachers from the state. Wilson currently serves as the director of the Space Sciences Laboratory at NASA/Marshall, and will highlight the scientific research performed there, as well as the connection between education and research at NASA. The annual meeting will be held at the Tan-Tar-A resort in Osage Beach, Missouri, located about 45 minutes south of the state capital, Jefferson City, on Lake of the Ozarks. Other NASA speakers include Sally Little , director of the Technology Transfer Office at NASA/Marshall, and Robert Schwinghamer , Associate Center Director - Technical. "C ommunicating scientific knowledge is as important to us as the development of that knowledge," Wilson commented. "If all we do is generate research papers, we haven't done our job, and the education customer is one of our most important. "I want to share not only the science that we do at NASA, but more importantly to express to these educators how important NASA feels that their jobs are to the future of America. We cannot have success as a nation in the 21st century without a technically literate society. And these teachers are the key to developing that scientific literacy. It's crucial to our national interest."

For Immediate Release
June 8, 2000
Coordinating Board approves general education policy revisions POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education approved revisions to its Credit Transfer Policy that will facilitate postsecondary student transfer. The changes, which will be implemented over the next two years, encourage alignment of college and university general education programs with state goals and competencies for a 42-semester-hour block of credit. While programs will vary in faculty design and delivery, students completing programs under the revised policy will be accepted in transfer as having met the equivalent of the receiving institution's 42-hour block of general education credit. This policy promotes institutional autonomy and diverse general education programs while ensuring similar competencies that allow for an effective transfer system. The policy does not mandate coursework; rather, it pinpoints skills and knowledge that should be emphasized, including communication, higher-order thinking, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics and several other areas. Approval of the policy revisions is the result of two years of statewide discussion among college and university faculty, chief academic officers, and other academic leaders. The Council on Public Higher Education and the Presidents and Chancellors' Council of the Missouri Community College Association previously indicated support for the policy revisions.
