Facilities

Most state parks have basic campsites, which include a parking pad, table, grill and lantern post; and electric campsites, which have basic facilities plus electric. Some sites offer basic facilities plus electric, water and sewer hookups. Many camping areas have modern restrooms, hot showers, trailer dump stations, coin-operated laundries and firewood. In 2003, reservations are accepted in 24 state parks. A portion of campsites in the reservation parks are available for the first-come, first-served user except at Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, which is 100 percent reservable. Also, first-come, first-served users may occupy an available reservable campsite for a limited time. Campers must first check with park staff before occupying a reservable campsite. In 2003, the following park facilities offer only first-come, first-served campsites:

  • Tailings are subject to topographic changes resulting from erosion. Be alert for inclines, changing slopes and sudden drop offs. Operate your vehicle at a safe and prudent speed at all times. Operators of ATVs and motorcycles must wear protective helmets that meet or exceed U.S. Department of Transportation of ANSI z90.1 certification; the only exception is for vehicles with fully enclosed metal cabs. Motorized vehicles, except motorcycles and three and four-wheel all terrain vehicles (ATVs), must be equipped with seat belts for each occupant and fastened while vehicle is in motion. Motorized vehicles, except motorcycles, must be equipped with a flexible mast, minimum of 72 inches in length, and an orange flag measuring at least 72 square inches displayed at top of mast. Motorized vehicles must be equipped with functioning brakes and muffler, with noise limit not to exceed 86 DBA. Motorcycles and ATVs must be equipped with a spark arrester.
