Influence of Stress Management Workshop on Perceived Family Support and State Anxiety Levels of Full-time Nursing Students The purpose of this study was to examine full-time nursing students and the impact of a stress management intervention on state anxiety and their perception of family support. Five research questions were posed. They were:
  • What is the difference in nursing student perception of family support pre- and post-stress management intervention?
  • What is the difference in nursing student expression of state anxiety pre-stress and management intervention?
  • What is the relationship between state trait anxiety of nursing students pre- and post-stress management intervention?
  • What are the relationships among family support and state and trait anxiety in nursing students pre- and post-stress management intervention?
  • Are there suggested influences of certain demographic variables on nursing student expression of family support and state and trait anxiety? The sample in this study consisted of 13 first-year nursing students randomly selected at a two-year community college in rural southern Illinois. Each subject completed instruments consisting of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1983), Familial Support Semantic Differential, and demographic data. Subjects participated in a stress management intervention workshop through the Student Success Center on campus.

Patient Satisfaction with Family Nurse Practitioner Services in St. Francois County, Missouri. The purpose of the study was to assess the level of patient satisfaction pertaining to family nurse practitioner services in St. Francois County, Missouri. The data analysis also described the influence that age, gender, race, marital status, educational level, income, insurance provider, and why the appointment with the family nurse practitioner was made, had on the satisfaction of patients receiving health care services from family nurse practitioners. The design of the study was quantitative and descriptive to correlate the concept of patient satisfaction with family nurse practitioner services through structured data collection and statistical data analysis. The revised version of the DiTomasso-Willard Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire, a 46-item questionnaire using a 4-point Likert response scale, along with a demographic data sheet were used to gather data. The offices of two family nurse practitioners were the sites for the study's data collection. Both offices were located in St. Francois County, Missouri. A sample size of 64 was achieved.

    Starting Early Starting Smart
Casey Family Programs and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are collaborating on this national initiative. (SAMHSA is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.) Starting Early Starting Smart (SESS) is a knowledge development application grant which funds the integration of substance abuse and mental health prevention and treatment services in primary care and early childhood sites. This new approach is designed to identify policy and service delivery questions and problems of national concern, provide relevant findings, and ensure that the information learned is used to develop state of the art practice at the community and state levels. Twelve sites across the country, serving an early childhood population ages 0-7 and their caregivers, will be studied to evaluate the impact of these services on outcomes for youth and families served. To learn more about SESS, please view the documents below.

Family Literacy: Directions in Research and Implications for Practice January 1996
Designing and Conducting Family Literacy Programs That Account for Racial, Ethnic, Religious, and Other Cultural Differences
    Vivian L. Gadsden
    University of Pennsylvania
Rather than conceptualizing the racial, ethnic, and cultural histories of learners as an addendum to design and conduct, programs must assess the strengths and knowledge voids that their staff members bring to the task of teaching and the cultural assets and individual limitations that the populations they serve contribute to the learning environment.

This paper focuses on the issues of race, culture, and class, and their implications for instruction and learning in family literacy programs. However, the discussion presented in the paper reconfigures the question assumed in the title. Rather than asking learners to justify their cultural and social histories, it is presupposed that programs will assume responsibility for seeking out this information as an essential part of program development, and that they can and will pose the issues for themselves. Learners' racial, ethnic, religious, and cultural history cannot be dismissed easily, even when learners choose not to make this history an issue in their learning, or when the history or the daily experiences of the learners are dissimilar to those of the instructor or to other learners.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. (1989). First teachers. Washington, DC: Author.
This book contains a brief introduction which discusses the problem of illiteracy in the United States, the intergenerational transmission of literacy, the beliefs underlying family literacy programs, and how family literacy programs address illiteracy. The book consists of "snapshots" of the following 10 family literacy programs: (1) Parent and Child Education (PACE) Program; (2) The Kenan Trust Family Literacy Project; (3) SER Family Learning Centers (FLCs); (4) Parent Readers Program; (5) MOTHERREAD; (6) Mother's Reading Program; (7) Arkansas Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY); (8) Parents as Partners in Reading; (9) Parent Leadership Training Project; and (10) Avance Family Support and Education Program. For each program, information is provided regarding how and why the program was developed, the setting, funding, and components of the program, evidence for the success of the program, and advice for policymakers and practitioners. A summary chart which details the goals, population, outreach efforts, funding, support services, materials, special features, and outcomes is also presented. A list of program contacts and other sources for information on literacy conclude the book. This book is helpful to individuals interested in learning about the different types of family literacy programs and efforts, as well as how to contact programs or centers for more information.
