AncestorNews: Jumping Off
by Nancy Hendrickson
Not long ago, I wondered how many of our ancestors traveled west by way of St. Joseph, Mo. I surfed the Net, but wasn't able to find any solid numbers. Since it was the major jumping-off place for the Oregon Trail, I'm guessing tens of thousands hitched up their teams at St. Joe, and then shoved off for new horizons. My family was in Missouri around 1835, but didn't make it up to St. Joe until sometime in the 1930s. Unfortunately, none of the young mail carriers were part of my family. Are they part of yours? I found a great list of riders at www.xphomestation.com/names.html , and it even contains some biographies. If you are descended from any Pony Express riders, let me know. Pony Express Museum

Ascii format ready to be copied into your word- processor, or is easily opened by Wordpad. Macintosh/Windows compatible. 2,645 pages.
Compac Disc (CD); the set of 14 disks on one cd) - This is a compilation of 23,350 confederate soldiers who died at various times. From obituaries in Confederate Veteran Magazine (1893-1919) and Cemetery records, including many of major National cemeteries. Listed alphabetically for easy finger-tip reference. Includes birth and death dates, place, regiment, rank, where buried, etc. The notes field includes obituary information, names of widows, children, parents, place of residence, battles, etc. Alphabetized by soldier's surname. If cemetery information was the source, usually the birth and/or death and place of death was given. However, there are many unmarked graves in the National Cemeteries. Sometimes I only found a list of (burial) names, without any dates. If the source was an obituary, the data from the obituary was included, such as widows, children, parents, battles, etc. This is an effort to consolidate data. It contains 23,350 Confederates, and is by no means complete.

    Native American Genealogy
There are many unique challenges encountered when researching Native American (Indian) genealogy. The traditions, naming customs and kinship systems varied widely among tribes; therefore, it is usually necessary that the researcher become familiar with those that pertain to a particular tribe. Our reference library has a splendid Indian collection for the historian, but our published sources are incomplete for tracing Indian genealogy. By 1836, Indian tribes in Missouri had been removed and no longer had claims to any Missouri land. The Society does not have, nor are we aware of, lists of rolls of Indians in Missouri. Individuals who left the "Trail of Tears" did not maintain their tribal status in most cases. Please note below some agencies you might find helpful in your research. NATIONAL ARCHIVES Valuable records of federal government agencies, including records from various field offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs , have been deposited throughout the United States. National Archives records, 1830-1940, deal chiefly with Indians who
