James Harlan interview
Who are these guys from 1815, what are they doing out there? They're surveying for the General Land Office for the United States. They hired a corps of surveyors. They'd walk these lines, describe what they saw, and make a value-assessment: first rate, second rate, third rate, primarily for farming or timber. And they would rate the timber: good, bad, thin, sparse. They'd give a description of the other vegetation, the under-story. They'd say they were in barrens the old term barrens, being an opening in the forest or open beautiful prairie. So we get the divisions between forest, woodland, open woodland, barrens, and where the prairie was. Today's river is fourteen foot deep, and a half mile wide. Well, that river back then was a mile or two miles wide, and four foot deep, full of sand, cottonwood trees and islands. That keelboat, I believe I read it was necessary for them to have about four feet of draft, well, that's the reason they wound up dragging that thing to Montana, because they had a hell of a time trying to find deep enough water where they could sail openly. Plus the sand was shifting back and forth on them all the time, they had all sorts of problems, breaking the mast, the boat getting caught in eddies and sand, and turning around on them. I can look at that old river, and see why they had problems in there. Why were these survey guys out there?

Introduction
Before 1800, the Missouri River was one of North America's most diverse and dynamic ecosystems. During the past 200 years, civil engineering has transformed it into a navigation system regulated by reservoirs and confined by bank stabilization and flood control structures. These modifications have reduced seasonal flow variability and sediment load and have disconnected the river from backwater, off-channel, and floodplain habitats. Missouri River Snags by Karl Bodmer (1833-1834) Flooding along the Lower Missouri River in 1993 and again in 1996 created a side-channel chute across Lisbon Bottom, a well-formed loop bottom near Glasgow, Mo. The formation and subsequent development of the chute have provided USGS scientists with a glimpse of a preregulated Missouri River. Knowledge of geologic characteristics and processes in an alluvial setting like Lisbon Bottom provides a scientific basis for floodplain management. This knowledge is also vital to a complete understanding of riverine habitat disturbance, recovery, and rehabilitation. A critical component of this knowledge is an understanding of the spatial and temporal relationships between riverine habitats and geomorphic processes.

Population Estimates: Concepts and Geography
What is a population estimate? The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1 estimates for years after the last published decennial census (1990), as well as for past decades. Existing data series such as births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration, are used to update the decennial census base counts. PEP estimates are used in Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes. A methodology reference accompanies most of our population estimates offerings. How are estimates different from projections? There is not a distinct dichotomy between population estimates and population projections, but there are some differences in time reference and derivation. Estimates usually are for the past, while projections typically are for future dates. Estimates generally use existing symptomatic data, for example, (births, deaths, migration), collected from various sources. Projections must assume future trends for fertility, mortality, and other demographic processes. At the Census Bureau, the population projections use the latest available estimates as starting points. In our current product offerings the user may see both an estimate and a projection available for the same reference date, which may not agree because they were produced at different times. In such cases, estimates are the preferred data.

1,324 feet The Ozark Natural Division (known as the "Ozark Plateau") is a large, unglaciated region of greater elevation than the surrounding areas. This plateau comprises almost 40 percent of the state. Characterized by thin, often stony, residual soils, the topography is often very steep. Caves, springs, bluffs, and high-gradient, clear-flowing streams with entrenched "meanders" are characteristic features. Deciduous, pine-oak and pine forests formed the predominant vegetation in pre-settlement times. Glades, some of them extensive, commonly occur where bedrock surfaces. Bottomland deciduous forests are common along many of the streams. The great age and physiographic diversity of the Ozarks make it the region of greatest species diversity in Missouri. This division is divided into six sections. The Salem Plateau Natural Section is a broad, gentle plain that was originally forested to a great extent but is now characterized by open pastureland and scattered trees. Bottomland deciduous forests remain along many streams.
