    Public Schools
Public school data on districts, schools, principals, teachers and library media centers are reliable at the state and national levels. A public school is defined as an institution that provides educational services for at least one of grades 1 through 12 (or comparable ungraded levels), has one or more teachers to give instruction, is located in one or more buildings, receives public funds as primary support and is operated by an education or chartering agency. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical, alternative and public charter schools. Schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense are included. They also include Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts. Traditional Public Schools are a subset of all public schools that are not public charter schools. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical and alternative schools. They also include schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense and Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts. See also the definitions for public charter schools.

Beginning with the 1997 graduates, Rolla High School students who qualify, are eligible for two years of free tuition, books and fees to any Missouri public community college, vocational school or technical school. Rolla High School is designated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as an A+ school site. An A+ school must offer students a rigorous academic and technical education that will prepare them for the workplace, post-secondary vocational/technical training or college.
The education of all students is important, regardless of their plans following high school. Some Rolla High School graduates will choose to attend a four year college or university; others may go directly into the workforce or the military; and still others may seek additional training at a post-secondary vocational school or community college. The A+ Schools program is designed to ensure that no matter which option is selected, all high school students will be provided selection of courses, career counseling, technology and/or workplace skill development opportunities which are related to their career goals.

April 24, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber President (573) 634-3511
Karen Buschmann, Communications Director (573) 634-3511 The report can be found at www.mo-peer.net. "PEER is designed to show how schools are faring by comparing student achievement among districts with similar economics," said Daniel P. Mehan, president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce. "PEER allows districts to target their limited resources to those areas that need the most improvement. For example, if a school in a PEER group is doing exceptionally well in science, PEER points that out. The school will receive well-deserved recognition for excellence, and other schools will be able to learn from their success." Working with the University of Missouri Consortium for Educational Policy Analysis, the report groups school districts into comparative clusters, called "PEER Groups," based on similarities in economic factors. It then evaluates student achievement scores, dropout rates and other performance criteria within these PEER Groups. PEER fills a void that currently exists in evaluation of Missouri’s education system. Missouri law specifically prohibits the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from comparing schools districts. As a result, the annual comprehensive "report card" on Missouri schools provides reams of data without providing any real guide for Missourians to know how their schools are doing compared with the rest of the state.

    General Information
    George Jewell's Famed Family
A stone wall and iron gates surround the graves of a well-known educator and a governor of Missouri who are among the more than 40 descendants of George A. Jewell buried in Jewell Cemetery. Located within the city limits of Columbia, Jewell Cemetery was once part of an estate owned by George Jewell, whose family became one of Missouri's earliest dynasties. Jewell set aside the lot for the final resting place of his descendants. In 1841, he deeded the cemetery to his son William and grandson Thomas. The most noteworthy of George Jewell's descendants buried in the cemetery are William Jewell and Charles Hardin. William Jewell (1789-1852), the most well-known of the Jewell family buried in this cemetery, was a long-time educator, physician, reformer, architect and ordained minister. He held political office as mayor of Columbia and later as a state legislator. As mayor of Columbia, Jewell initiated the surveying and paving of the city's streets. He also improved sanitation standards in the early town. Later, as state legislator, Jewell worked for reforms such as abolishing the whipping post and pillory and for establishing a public hospital in St. Louis. He also was a strong supporter of public schools. He supported a bill to establish the location of the state university in Columbia and chaired a committee to raise subscriptions for the university, giving $1,800 himself.
