Southwest Missouri State University 2002-2003 Undergraduate Catalog Home Teacher Education Program Teacher Education Program Southwest Missouri State University is approved by the Missouri State Board of Education to offer basic and advanced professional education programs for purposes of professional certification. Admission to the University does not automatically qualify a student to participate in the professional component of the teacher education program. That participation is granted upon demonstration of a high level of academic and professional competence. Successful participation should result in the student’s achieving certification to teach in Missouri public schools. Professional Portfolio All students desiring Missouri certification are required to submit a professional portfolio. This portfolio will be assessed, evaluated, and monitored throughout the teacher education program with assistance and guidance from faculty. Teacher Certification Program is designed for those with a baccalaureate degree who desire secondary (9-12) or middle school (5-9) teacher certification without seeking another degree. Subject Area Requirements To achieve certification through this program students will need to fulfill State requirements in three fields: general education, the teaching subject area, and professional education. It is a document of standards which lays out the state's vision and expectations for a quality school and is the method of accrediting Missouri's public schools. One standard states: "The district must document how it is providing comprehensive health instruction, including, specifically, drug and alcohol abuse prevention education and AIDS prevention education to all students at every grade level." (Copies of the MSIP standards are available from DESE.) Presently, only courses that have "Health" in the course title require a Certified Health Teacher (CHT). These courses are found predominantly at the high school health level. The majority of Missouri's children (K-8) are expected to be taught health by classroom teachers who have not been certified to teach health. It is the "integrated" approach which often never gets done. Lincoln University would like to help central Missouri's active teachers become better prepared to integrate health into their classrooms by becoming Certified Health Teachers. Most of our health-related courses are offered in the late afternoon, evening, or summer for your convenience. In-service training can broaden the knowledge base of working teachers and get the much needed health curriculum actively working in Missouri schools. MSCA believes there are a number of compelling reasons for the continuation of teaching training and experience for counselor certification as part of the certification process. Missouri is the leading authority in Comprehensive Guidance Programs. According to figures from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 96 percent of the school districts in Missouri have implemented comprehensive guidance programs. One of the major components of a comprehensive program includes classroom visits so that the counselor is no longer in an office waiting for students, but rather in the classroom interacting with each and every student on his/her caseload. Specific curriculum is delivered and each student is now exposed to the counselor on a regular and on-going basis. In order to maintain classroom control, employ affective teaching methods and assess student learning, a teaching certificate and experience is vital. Often teachers in Missouri are given preparation time during the school counselor’s classroom visit and the counselor is left in total charge of the students and the classroom. It is also important to note that a counselor’s training will enable him/her to recognize subtle signs of a student at risk and shorten the time that may elapse before a teacher would recommend and refer that student for assistance.
