Missouri lawmakers address women's health, teacher certification
By MICHELLE REAGAN News Tribune Women's health and teacher's certification were the issues addressed by two bills perfected Wednesday by the Missouri House of Representatives. Although touted as bipartisan efforts, few Republicans joined Democratic Gov. Bob Holden at a press conference today to discuss the bills' progress. House Bill 754 would establish a salary supplement of $5,000 annually for 10 years to eligible teachers who receive National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. The teacher's school district also may add to the individual's salary 10 percent of a mentor teacher's base pay. Many legislators hope that teachers, after national certification, would share new techniques and perspectives with co-workers. Seeking national certification is a teacher's choice, not a job requirement, as is the current state certification renewal system, legislators agreed.

    University of Missouri-Rolla
Teachers have an opportunity to spark interest in learning where little or none existed before. They can open horizons for their students and change the world through their influence on young minds. For some, teaching is a career path; for others, it is a calling. Often, the people that positively influenced successful people early in their lives were their teachers... UMR offers Teaching Certification for Secondary and Middle School Education (in cooperation with UM-Columbia) to undergraduates. If you have the desire to teach, and are willing to put a little more effort into your academic path, we can show you how to qualify for the special rewards teaching has to offer. According to alumni self-reporting, approximately 35% of our English majors choose education as their career path upon graduation. Should you choose to teach at the University level, UMR's English Department offers a Graduate Program in conjunction with UM-St. Louis. You may view the State of Missouri's information for teacher certification by visiting the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Teacher Certification online.

College presidents discuss improving teacher education, recruitment JEFFERSON CITY - Improving the quality of teacher education and recruiting minority students into the teaching profession were among the topics discussed by higher education leaders from 28 Missouri colleges and universities during the first-ever Presidents/Chancellors Educational Summit on Teacher Education on April 25. Commissioner of Education Robert Bartman and Commissioner of Higher Education Kala M. Stroup agreed to coordinate the historic summit as a result of the emerging consensus among state education leaders regarding the importance of teacher preparation to the overall quality of Missouri elementary, secondary and higher education. The summit also was created in response to the Missouri K-16 Coalition's October 1999 report, which outlines issues concerning teacher education, preparation, certification and professional development, and the 1999 Knight Higher Education Collaborative/College and University Presidents Roundtables, during which Missouri presidents and chancellors agreed to make teacher education a top priority. The inaugural summit gave participants the opportunity to engage in a statewide conversation with leaders from all sectors of Missouri higher education - two-year, four-year, public and independent - that are involved in the education of teachers.
