January 15, 2002 Dear Missouri Mathematics Educator: Greetings from mathematics and mathematics education faculty of institutions of higher education throughout Missouri! This letter is a request for your assistance. The teaching profession has reached a time of critical shortage. Many current teachers are reaching retirement age, and we see fewer certificates issued to new educators every year. Mathematics education is among the areas hardest hit by this shortage. In 2001, all Missouri higher education institutions combined graduated less than 100 middle and/or secondary mathematics teacher candidates. Last year more than 400 jobs were posted for mathematics teachers in Missouri. We know one of the strongest factors influencing young people to become a teacher is the encouragement of teachers they had in elementary, middle and secondary school. As a teacher, you are in a unique position to inform them about teaching as a career-its rewards as well as its challenges. We hope this letter will be the first step in an ongoing effort to encourage high school students with solid skills in mathematics to consider mathematics teaching as a career. Thanks for your help in spreading the word. If you have any questions about this request, or any suggestions for increasing interest in a career as a mathematics teacher, please let us know.

Today's new teachers must go through more to retain certification than teachers in the past. Instead of receiving a lifetime teaching certificate upon graduation, you must now go through three levels of professional growth and licensure. The following outline describes the basic requirements to achieve each level of certification: Professional Classification I Licensure (PC I)
The PC I license is issued to new college graduates and to teachers with less than three years of experience. The PC I is a three-year certificate, which is reissued one time only unless you earn additional academic credit. Before subsequent reissues, teachers must earn at least six semester hours. All requirements must be satisfied to enter the PC II level. Requirements:
  • Participate in an entry-year mentor program.
  • Develop and implement a Professional Development Plan (PDP).
  • Complete 30 clock hours of in-service training.

Single Assessment Pass-Rate
First, let us fulfill a pleasant obligation . . .
Concerned with the quality of Teacher Education, Congress included as part of Title II of the Higher Education Act a Section entitled "Accountability for Programs that Prepare Teachers." Section 207 mandates that every institution of higher education which conducts a teacher preparation program that enrolls students receiving Federal assistance under this Act must make public before April 7, 2001, the following information:
  • The pass rate of the institution's graduates on the teacher certification or licensure assessments of the state in which the institution is located; A comparison of the program's passing rate with the average pass rate for programs in the state.
100% SUCCESS
150 Missouri Southern teacher education graduates in the 1999-2000 academic year were administered the Praxis II, a nationally normed teacher exam required by the State of Missouri for certification purposes.

Several graduate programs at SMSU offer an accelerated option. Depending on the program, a maximum of 12 hours of graduate credits will apply toward completion of the undergraduate degree requirements. Students accepted into an accelerated program must complete a "Mixed Credit" form prior to registering for courses intended to satisfy both undergraduate and graduate requirements. This form can be obtained from the student's department or the Graduate College, Carrington 306.
