EDUCATION UNIVERSITIES/VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS The Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center (BEC) conveniently located in Malden , has provided quality higher educational opportunities to the area since January 1988. The educational programming provides both credit and noncredit courses. The success of the BEC is due largely to the cooperation among members of the Bootheel Educational Consortium. Members of the consortium include: Southeast Missouri State University, Three Rivers Community College, the University of Missouri Extension, and area vocational/technical schools. Also, specialized courses are occasionally offered by the University of Missouri Columbia. Approximately 70 classes are offered each semester for both day and evening students. Classes offered include a wide range of general education courses designed for transfer to a college as well as several for a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree. The BEC also offers a number of graduate classes from Southeast both on location and through Interactive Television. A number of surveys are periodically conducted by the Southeast staff to determine what educational needs are evident in the region. Specialized instruction; e.g., workshops, seminars, and training can be easily developed through the consortium partners. The BEC’s seminar room can accommodate as many as 100 people. Many of the workshops that have been offered have been targeted to meet the needs of area businesses and industries . Recent workshops have included: Statistical Process Control and Process Capability Analysis/ISO 9000 International Standard; MSDS's and Hazardous Waste; Total Preventive Maintenance; Manufacturing Safety Analysis; Total Quality Management; Wastewater Management; State and Local Law Enforcement Training.
