Modern pentathlon is an exciting diverse sport, steeped in history dating back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece.
The ancient pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. The earliest recorded winner of the ancient pentathlon was Lampis of Sparta, 2 707 years ago.
Admiration for the ancient pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The modern pentathlon , introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden, 1912, comprised of the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, embracing the spirit of its ancient counterpart. It was De Coubertin's belief that it would be the event, above all others, that "tested a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete".
The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports which make up the modern pentathlon arose out of the romantic adventures of a liaison officer whose horse is brought down in enemy territory. Having defended himself with his pistol and sword, he swims across a raging river and delivers the message on foot. Not surprisingly, it was the military which most enthusiastically adopted this new sport with its inherent demands of courage, coordination, physical fitness, self-discipline and flexibility in ever changing circumstances.

  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Old programmes of the Paris Exposition show that women also participated in ballooning, croquet, equestrianism, golf, tennis and yachting. Bearing this in mind, we take the view that all women who took part in these sports were Olympians.

26. The Decathlon In Olympic History - DECA, The Decathlon Association
In one sense, modern decathlon history begins with the Thorpe story. The Greeks createdan allaround test, the pentathlon, for the ancient olympic Games.
http://www.decathlonusa.org/history.html
Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Development
The revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, unlike the original Games, has a clear, concise history. team dominated the track and field events, taking first place in 9 of the 12 events. The Games were a success, and a second Olympiad, to be held in France, was scheduled. Olympic Games were held in 1900 and 1904, and by 1908 the number of competitors more than quadrupled the number at Athensfrom 311 to 2,082. Although the Olympic Games have been increasingly politicized, the ideal of the world's best athletes competing against each other in the arena of so-called pure sport has been at least partially realized, especially from the athletes' point of view. And even though skill and courage are manifested by most Olympic participants, the great gold medalists are the ones who are most often remembered. More History

The History of the Olympic Games
The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia in 776 BC. Some people have thought that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. (Olympia is in Greece) The only event held at the first Olympics was the stadium footrace. The Olympics were important to the Ancient Greeks. The only event in the first 13 games was a running race of 192 meters. Archologists have traced the founding of the Olympic games to King Iphitos, who planted the olive tree from which the wreaths for the winners were cut. Olympic Games were held in the valley of Olympia in Greece every four years for almost 1200 years. Inspired by the ancient Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin started the modern Olympic Games in 1896. They attracted about 245 athletes (ALL MEN) in 43 events. At the Sydney 2000 Games, more than 10,000 athletes will take part in 300 events. The Olympic Movement has survived wars, and terrorism to become a symbol of the ability of the people of all nations to come together in peace and friendship. The Ancient Olympic Games, honored Zeus, the king of the gods.
In 708 B.C., wrestling and the pentathlon were added. The pentathlon was jumping, running, discus throw, the javelin throw, and wrestling all together. Boxing was added in 688 B.C., and the four-horse chariot race was added in 680 B.C. Horse racing was added in 648 B.C. Some unusual events included in the Olympics were a race in armour, a chariot race called the apene in which two mules pulled the chariot, and a competition for trumpeters.

Brief History top The most beautiful athletes of them all are the pentathletes - Aristotle Modern pentathlon owes its existence to a legend, the pentathlons of Ancient Greece and the tireless efforts of Baron Pierre de Courbertin, founder of the Modern Olympics and chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for over three decades.
The legend of modern pentathlon is of a Napoleonic cavalry officer who is sent to deliver an urgent dispatch. Given an unfamiliar horse, he rode across challenging terrain under enemy fire shooting a number of his pursuers. His ammunition expended, he was then confronted by a soldier with his sword drawn. He won the duel and remounted his horse only to reach a river which his steed could not cross. Our gallant hero swam the river and then ran the rest of the way to deliver his message successfully.
Baron Pierre de Courbertin sought to include in the Modern Olympics an event which embraced the spirit of the ancient pentathlon where pentathletes competed in the diverse disciplines of discus, javelin, jumping, running and wrestling. He achieved his goal in 1912 when modern pentathlon was introduced at the Olympic Games in Stockholm with the five disciplines of shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running reputedly influenced by the tale of the cavalry officer.

History
The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called " military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. Following the lead of the international organization, the national governing body was originally the U. S. Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Association. The U. S. Biathlon Association was spun off in 1980.
