Modern Pentathlon ...information
Short description
M odern pentathlon consists of the disciplines shooting fencing swimming riding and running . In each discipline the competitors get points . The points are added together and the person with the highest total score wins. There is both individual and team relay competitions with three persons in each team. All larger competitions are completed in one day. This is an adjustment the sport has made to be more attractive for the spectators and to be allowed to stay in the Olympic Games where it was introduced 1912. Sweden has been very successful through the years in the World Championships and the Olympic Games (See the table below). "The most perfect sportsmen, therefore, are the Pentathletes because in their body strength and speed are combined in beautiful harmony" - Aristotle (384-322 BC)
History
M odern pentathlon was introduced for the first time by Baron Pierre de Coubertin 1912 at the Olympics in Stockholm Sweden. It is said that he got the idea from a liaison officer who had to deliver a message by horse. The horse was brought down in enemy territory and he had to defend himself with his pistol and sword. He swam across a raging river and finally delivered the message on foot. The first Swedish Championships was held 1921. In the year 1948 the International Modern Pentathlon Union (

MODERN PENTATHLON REPORT Back to NEWS Monday, October 2 Cook seeking wider horizons for pentathlon From David Powell in Sydney Steph Cook, who became the first women’s Olympic champion of her sport here yesterday, will seek to add the second most important title to her laurels next July when the world championships are staged at Millfield, close to the high performance centre in Bath where she prepared for the Games. Kate Allenby, the bronze medal-winner, will join Cook in an attempt to position Britain indisputably as the leading women’s nation. In the three years since Cook began to compete internationally, she has accumulated an impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medals from world team and team relay championships. Small wonder that Allenby, who helped to campaign for women modern pentathletes to be admitted to the Olympics 88 years after the men were added to the programme, is now calling for a team event to be put on the schedule for Athens in 2004. The Olympic programme covered individual events only, whereas world championships incorporate team and team relay events. “The world championships are in Britain next year, so we have something to prove,” Allenby said. “We want to see a team event in the next Olympics because we have five girls in the top 20 in the world at the moment.” Based on rankings, Georgina Harland was worth one of the 24 places in the women’s Olympic field here, but each country was restricted to two competitors. However, Harland was brought here for experience and as a training partner for Cook and Allenby.

http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/pentathlon/pentathlonreport4.html
MODERN PENTATHLON REPORT Back to NEWS Sunday, October 1 Cook finds recipe for success From David Powell in Sydney There is no set menu for the breakfast of champions. When Steph Cook joined Audley Harrison for the first meal of the day at 5.15 here this morning, she had muesli and bananas, he had a fry-up. But their evening drink was the same. Champagne. Three years after interrupting her career as a doctor to train full-time for a sport at which she was still a novice, Cook succeeded where Britain’s men had failed since modern pentathlon was admitted into the Olympics in 1912. The first Briton to win an individual gold medal, Cook also goes down as the inaugural women’s Olympic champion. Nobody aware of Cook’s strengths was surprised that she came through from eighth place after four events to win on the final discipline, the run. A former England cross country international, she said beforehand that she had “a bit of a reputation as a runner”. She has even more of one now. Since Jim Fox led Britain to team gold in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, modern pentathlon has existed on the fringes of British sport. Those within it, though, have become increasingly aware of Cook’s strengths as a runner and now the whole world knows about it. At the world championships in Pesaro, Italy, in June, Cook pulled up from 25th to ninth on the run. In July, at the European championships in Székesfehévár, Hungary, she raced through from fourteenth place to take the silver. In Mexico City in March, she achieved her first World Cup victory after setting of on the 3,000 metres in fourth place.

Sounds like a pretty weird combination, huh? Did You Know? American George Patton (yes, that George Patton) was a strong challenger for the modern pentathlon gold in 1912 but faltered in the shooting competition. As the story goes, a young French officer in Napoleon's army was sent on an unfamiliar horse to deliver a message into hostile territory. He was first greeted by an enemy soldier with his sword drawn. The two dueled . The French officer won the battle and continued on his horse until it was shot out from under him. He

Time needed : 2 hours Lesson Overview Lesson Summary In this lesson students will compare the triathlon with the modern pentathlon using the Venn Diagram. They will examine the criteria used for creating a multi-event sport, create a new one, then develop a poster promoting this new multi-event sport.
Objectives
  • Students will learn about two sports in the Olympics, modern pentathlon and the triathlon. Students will compare and contrast this information using a Venn diagram. Students will apply this information to create a new multi-event sport using sports that may or may not be currently used in the Olympics. Students will create a poster promoting this new multi-event sport.
Student Prerequisite Skills
  • Knowledge of how Venn diagrams work.
Materials
  • Paper Writing utensils Blank Venn diagram (optional) Poster size art paper and coloring supplies
Introduction Suggested Lesson Plan Procedures Discuss multi-event sports as a whole and what purpose they serve. Example: Modern pentathlon was created using the following metaphor: A soldier is delivering a message from the war front. His horse dies along the way, and the soldier (competitor) has to fight his way clear by sword and pistol before swimming across a river and running to the final destination to deliver his message. (From: British Olympic Association - Modern Pentathlon). The triathlon pulls together various sports of high interest.

MODERN PENTATHLON

30 September-1 October 2000
Originally modern pentathlon was a five-day event, but this format was not conducive to spectator or media interest. In an attempt to lift the discipline’s public appeal, a one-day format was scheduled for the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. This format continued in Sydney, where athletes and spectators moved across three different venues throughout the day. Modern pentathlon is now a frenzied event where, during one long day of competition, athletes must fire 20 shots at a target with an air pistol, fence with an épée sword, swim 200 m, negotiate a show jumping course on a horse drawn for them at random and finally, when nearly exhausted, run a 3000 m cross-country course. The fencing and riding components are considered to be the most important for success as the head-to-head fencing duels and the randomly selected horses present the best opportunities for substantial gains - or losses - in points. Standings in the competition tend to fluctuate dramatically from one event to the next and the winner often comes from the back to the front in the final running leg. Forty-eight athletes competed in Sydney, 24 men and 24 women, making it the smallest, in terms of number of participants, of any Olympic sport.
