But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Other events, including walking, Greco-Roman wrestling and the three-day event in equestrian, are also under review. Modern pentathlon is an exciting diverse sport, steeped in history dating back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The ancient pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. The earliest recorded winner of the ancient pentathlon was Lampis of Sparta, 2 707 years ago. Admiration for the ancient pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The modern pentathlon , introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden, 1912, comprised of the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, embracing the spirit of its ancient counterpart. It was De Coubertin's belief that it would be the event, above all others, that "tested a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete". The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports which make up the modern pentathlon arose out of the romantic adventures of a liaison officer whose horse is brought down in enemy territory. Having defended himself with his pistol and sword, he swims across a raging river and delivers the message on foot. Not surprisingly, it was the military which most enthusiastically adopted this new sport with its inherent demands of courage, coordination, physical fitness, self-discipline and flexibility in ever changing circumstances.

PITTSBURGH 2012 OLYMPIC VENUES The Best Sports Facilities in the World Pittsburgh currently has a robust, albeit aging, sports infrastructure, which includes Three Rivers Stadium, the Civic Arena, and Pitt Stadium. The proposed Olympic plans would replace or renovate the older facilities, construct new venues, and provide for public sports and recreation parks within Pittsburgh itself. An athlete has to be good to very good at target shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running in order to succeed. Today's modern pentathlon entered the Olympic program in 1912, largely as the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin, who saw this sport as the supreme test of versatility and felt it was an ideal sport for army officers. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. And so it was: the sport gained quick acceptance especially in Sweden and Finland and for the first 30 years or so, only military personnel took part.
