There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.

One young Athenian nobleman defended his political reputation by mentioning how he entered seven chariots in the Olympic chariot-race. This sport was brought into the Olympic competition in 1912, in the men's category, as a military skill event. The initial concept of the competition was a military dispatch rider whose mission was to deliver a message; he has to overcome several tests over his route to reach his target. The woman's competition commenced in the year 2000. Consisting in 5 events over a complete day's competition, the two categories, men's and women's, compete on different days. The athlete obtains points in the first four events and the last event, the race, is organized with a time handicap so that the athlete reaching the finish line first wins the gold medal. The Modern Pentathlon is governed by the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIMP). The competition is disputed by 32 athletes, 16 men and 16 women. The events to be disputed are: - Fencing: Épée duels.

The pentathletes are about to mount horses they know nothing about, with just 20 minutes to warm up, before tackling double and treble jumps and 10 other obstacles in the showjumping event. It’s the least predictable and most challenging of the pentathlon sports. The highly tuned athletes not only rely on their own skills and fitness – they are also at the mercy of an unknown element: a horse. The temperament and ability of the horse is an extremely important factor in the competition. The person given the task of selecting horses for the event therefore plays a crucial role. For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, that job is in the hands of Shannon O’Meara, who arrived at Charles Sturt University’s (CSU’s) Wagga Wagga Campus in March as Head Trainer. As the official supplier of equine services to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, CSU will accommodate and manage 20 horses to be trained for the Olympic competition at its Equine Centre.

Back to Home Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Sports Posted on Wed, Nov. 27, 2002 Modern Pentathlon, Baseball Look Set to Stay BY ADRIAN WARNER Reuters MEXICO CITY Jacques Rogge, orthopedic surgeon-turned-IOC president, is set to learn that taking a knife to the Olympic Games and cutting sports from the program can be just as challenging an operation as fixing bones. An International Olympic Committee (IOC) session opening on Wednesday will vote whether to take modern pentathlon, softball and baseball out of the 2008 Beijing Games, the first time the IOC has proposed such a radical change since 1936. Since taking over as president last year, former Olympic yachtsman Rogge has pledged to scale down the Summer Games after decades of expansionism under his predecessor Juan Antonio Samaranch because he feels the event is becoming too big and expensive to manage. But a radical IOC report on change which will be presented to the three-day session on Friday has caused huge controversy since it was published in August.

"Don't send us to the Olympic museum."
Klaus Schormann, head of the Modern Pentathlon Federation
(AP) A decision on whether to drop baseball, softball and modern pentathlon from the Olympics won't come until after the 2004 Athens Games.
The International Olympic Committee chose Friday to put off a vote that could eliminate a Summer Games sport for the first time since polo in 1936.
None of the 39 speakers during Friday's debate expressed support for a report that recommended trimming the three from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The report cited limited international appeal and high costs. "They've certainly gotten their warning about what our concerns are," said IOC member Dick Pound of Canada. IOC president Jacques Rogge avoided a question about whether the three sports are assured of being part of the Beijing Olympics. The sports promised to find ways to share costs - baseball plans to trim the length of its tournament and share fields with softball.

08/29/2002 - Updated 03:29 AM ET IOC panel wants to drop baseball, add golf By Vicki Michaelis, USA TODAY Tiger Woods drew huge crowds at an exhibition last November in China. He could do the same when the 2008 Summer Olympics are held there. By Vincent Yu, AP Critics have argued that the appeal of softball and baseball is not spread far enough worldwide to merit inclusion in the Olympics. Greco-Roman wrestling and modern pentathlon, two sports with long Olympic histories, carry the tag of being too outdated to attract audiences. A report to be considered Thursday by the International Olympic Committee's executive board recommends cutting the four sports, along with the three-day equestrian event and track and field's racewalking events, to make room for additions that could include golf and rugby. "It seems to me if you want to add sports because you think that's good, that's fine. Baseball ought to be there," said Don Fehr, executive director and counsel for the Major League Baseball Players Association and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
