    Geography:
Moldova is situated in the South-East of the European continent lying on an area of 33 700 square km, having the biggest density of population amongst the former Soviet republics – 134 people/square kilometer. This country is bordering with Ukraine in the East and South and Romania – in the West. Moldova has been split during Hrushchov’s period, who maid Ukraine as a present the southern part of the country with the exit to the Black Sea, including the Danube delta and the picturesque locality Vilcovo- called “Venice” on the Danube river. Recently, the Moldovan authorities negotiated to get 100m of seacoast to build an oil terminal, in stead of a section of speedway of 7 km – really, a “good” neighbor helping you “disinterestedly”. These 100m are now Moldova’s real exit to sea. The geographical zones are: the forests and steppe. The highest point has the height of 429,4 meters. The biggest rivers are: Nistru, Prut and Raut.

All these monasteries, due to their outter paintings (fresco) were taken into evidence by UNESCO and have received in 1976 the "Pome d'or" prize of FIJET International Organization for their cultural - touristic value. The biggest rivers in Moldova are the Nistru and the Prut. The Prut defines the western border, and the Nistru parallels the eastern border, several miles inward. The underground water reserve, mostly drinking water, is estimated at 200 million cubic metres. Population The Republic of Moldova is one of the most densely populated European countries. Its population grew from 3 million in 1961 to nearly 4.3 million in 1995. Population density increased, respectively, from 88 to 129 persons per square kilometre. As of January 1, 1997 Moldova had a population of 4,320,000 persons, consisting of the following ethnic groups: 64.5 % Moldovans, 13.8% Ukrainian, 13% Russian, 3.5% Gagauzi, 2% Bulgarian, 1.5 % Jewish and 1.7% other, including Belarussians, Germans, Polish, Turkish and Gypsies. The population is fairly evenly divided between urban and rural areas, at 46.6% and 53.4% respectively in 1990. The high ratio of the population in rural areas meant that while Moldova's net material product (NMP) per head was only about 80% of the Soviet Union average, living standards were high in terms of availability of food and consumer goods.
