Geography
The capital city of Chisinau, located in the heart of Moldova, has a population of 676,000. Since industry accounts for only 20 percent of Moldova's economy, the country must import most of its industrial products. Moldova belong to an area between the Dnestr and Prut rivers formerly known as Bessarabia. Bessarabia was an integral part of the Rumanian Principality of Moldova until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian empire by the Ottoman empire. In 1918 Bessarabia declared its independence from Russia and united with Romania. The Treaty of Paris codified the union in 1920, and for the net twenty years the Moldovans lived under the Rumanian rule. As a result of the Hitler-Stalin pact, in June 1940, Soviet troops occupied and annexed Bessarabia. The Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was declared in August 1940. After the Soviet annexation, Moldovia became a full-fledged member of the USSR until declaring its independence in August 1991.
Religion
The majority of Moldovans are Orthodox Christians. Like the Russian Orthodox church, the church in Moldova is one of several churches that stemmed from the Greek Orthodox church. Like their Russian and Greek counterparts, Moldovan believers celebrate Easter as the most important church holiday. They attend midnight services where music and icons are important to the liturgy. The icons are often chosen for their depiction of Christ's resurrection.

Geography The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state situated in southeastern Europe between Romania and Ukraine. It has a population of nearly 4.4 million people, and territory covering 33,700 square kilometres (8,000 sq. miles). The country's topography is diverse, ranging from a steppe area in the North and South, to forested and mountainous highlands up to 400 meters in elevation in the center of the country. Fertile black soil (cernozem) covers 80 % of the country and makes it's agriculture highly productive. There are two navigable rivers: Nistru and the Prut. The underground water reserve, mostly drinking water, is estimated at 200 million cubic meters. The country has a moderate continental climate. The warm season lasts 275-316 days a year. Major mineral deposits and natural resources consist of cement components and gypsum, limestone, sand and raw materials for bricks and tiles. Natural oil and brown coal deposits have been discovered in the south and their industrial importance is being thoroughly assessed at present. Population The Republic of Moldova is one of the most densely populated European counties. It's population grew from 3 million in 1961 to nearly 4.4 million in 1995. Population density increased, respectively, from 88 to129 persons per square kilometre. The urban population is 47 % with the balance of Moldovans residing in rural areas. A breakdown of major ethnic groups is as follows:
