Moldova is a part of the area known as Basarabia (in some sources is called Bessarabia - Russian version), geographically delineated by the Prut River on the west, the Nistru River on the north and the east, the Black Sea on the southeast, and the Chilia (Kiliya) arm of the Danube delta on the south. The Republic of Moldova approximately coincides with the eastern half of the principality of Moldova (1359-1859). Throughout its history Moldova was a subject to frequent invasions and changes. In the course of the 16th century, it fell under Turkish suzerainty but its eastern part was annexed by Russia in 1812, after a Russian-Turkish war. Most of this area remained under Russian control until 1918. At that time the whole of Basarabia became part of Romania, the unification being voted by its legilative body Sfatul Tarii. This move has been sanctioned by the 1920 Treaty of Paris. This reintegration with Romania was never recognized by the Soviet Union, which, in October 1924, established the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (MASSR) on the east bank of the Nistru (in Ukraine).

    History
The Republic of Moldova is a small country, favorably situated in the Southeast part of Europe, neighboring Romania to the West and Ukraine to the East. This piece of land boasts a rich history, abundant in dramatic and agitated events.
From the XIV century it was a part of the Moldova Principality, situated between Oriental Carpathians and the Nistru river, in the north bounded by Hotin, and in the South – by the Low Danube and the Black Sea.
Following the Peace concluded in Bucharest, in 1812, a part of this territory was asigned to Czarist Russia, which called it Basarabia - an older name, earlier attributed to the southern part. The aim was to identify this territory as a separate geographic entity from the Moldova Principality. The Independence of the Democratic Republic of Moldova was proclaimed in January 1918. And later, on March 27 1918 it was decided to re-unite it with Romania. The next annexure process took place in 1940, following the Molotov - Ribbentrop summit. According to this Basarabia became part of the USSR and was proclaimed as the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia. It comprised only nine Basarabian counties and six districts from the left bank of the Nistru River. The present territory of Moldova is smaller compared to the area attributed to Russian authorities in 1812, since the North Hotin, Acherman and the southern Ismail were given up in 1940 by the Soviet authorities to Ukraine.

O ver three hundred years the State of Moldova was under the Ottoman domination. The conflicts between Russia and the Ottoman Empire during the last years of this period had a strong impact on this country. In 1812 as a result of Russian-Turkish wars the Eastern half of the Principality of Moldova, locked by two natural frontiers – rivers Prut and Nistru, later known as Bessarabia, became part of the Russian Empire. From that moment till recent time Bessarabia changed hands many times between Romania and Russia. I n 1917 after the collapse of the Russian Empire, the Moldavian Democratic Republic was proclaimed on this territory. Not long after Bessarabia joined Romania. But the Soviet authorities did not recognize that union and, in 1924 they formed Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic on the left bank of Nistru river, as a part of the Soviet Ukraine. I n 1940 Romania was forced to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bucovina to the Soviet Union, and a few months later the Soviet authorities redrew the boundary of the annexed territory and set up a new union republic – the Moldavian Socialist Republic. The Soviet regime imposed the Cyrillic script on the Romanian language, Russian and Ukrainian immigration was encouraged, thousands of ethnics were deported.

    http://www.geocities.com/colilia/history.html
    Moldova : History
The history of Moldova is complicated by the fact that the republic's present-day territory was not called Moldova or Moldavia until 1940. Present-day Moldova occupies the central two-thirds of a region historically referred to as Bessarabia. For centuries the name Moldova referred to a larger area encompassing Bessarabia and stretching from the Black Sea in the south to Bukovina, a former province of Romania, in the north, and from the Siret River in the west to the Dnestr in the east.
Established in the 15th century, Moldova has a long history of foreign domination. It fell under Turkish suzerainty in the 16th century, and part of the north was added to the Austrian Empire in the 18th century. From 1812 to 1856 Russians occupied the eastern portion of Moldova, which they named Bessarabia. After Bessarabia was returned to Moldova in 1856, Moldova and Walachia were united to form the Kingdom of Romania in 1859. The territorial integrity of the new Romanian state did not last long, however.
In 1878 Russian forces reannexed Bessarabia, which remained part of the Russian Empire until 1917. In March 1918 the Bessarabian legislature voted in favor of unification with Romania, and at the Paris Peace Conference in 1920 the union was officially recognized by the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other western countries.

Early History Ancestors of Moldovans(Romanians) was the Thracian tribes of the Gets and Dacians . Numerous archaeological traces have been discovered including defense works, burial places and religious cult constructions between the Dniester and the Prut rivers, dating back to as early as the 4th century B.C. The Hellenistic influence can also be traced in the material culture of the Gets and Dacians. Later, at the time of the Great Migration of Nations, tribes of Kimmerians, Scythians, Sarmathians, and, finally, the Huns, passed through that land known as The Gate between the Carpathians and the Black Sea. After the Roman conquest of this territory in the second and third centuries A.D., the local population was romanized. Nevertheless, this contact area allowed the nomadic East (the Pecheneg, Polovets and Tatar-Mongol tribes) to meet the settled Western peoples with their organized agriculture. The first document referring to the Land of Moldova dates back to 1 360 A.D . In 1391 A.D., the ethnic group Moldovans was mentioned for the first time and, by the year 1402 A.D., written statements about Moldovan Lands appeared. The peak time in the formation of the medieval Moldovan state situated between the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea was the rule of

    WINES that Make MOLDOVA Famous
    HISTORY of the "Dionysos-Mereni"
In Moldova winemaking is an ancient art. History of the art brings us back until the 800 before JC. A lot of changes have occurred during those years - raids, wars, crisis of all kinds, though nothing could stop Moldovans from grape growing and wine-making. Our land has been blessed with fertile lands, hilly landscape and favorable climate for making vivid wines, which have their own personality. Dionysos Mereni winery has an aim to present to the world the top quality Moldovan wines which truly reflect Moldova's poten-tial as a fine wine region.
Today "Dionysos Mereni" winery is one of the most perspective and fast developing enterprises in the winemaking branch of Moldova.
History begins in 1959. History of the Dionysos Mereni winery is closely interlaced with the history of cultural winemaking in the post-war period in Moldova. During this period has been established a new system called Moldvinprom - a system of an indivisible viticulture and winemaking "giant" with huge vineyards with a reliable politics concerning varietals and its protection. Analyzing Moldova's nature it is easy to confirm that it has been created especially for a permanent viticulture developing. The soil, situation and climate of hilly lands of Moldova are the strongest basis for growing perfect grapes. Enough sun and rains throughout the year along with loving and caring hands of people who look after the vineyards and winemakers give birth to wines which could be called a divine gift (for more detailed information, please, visit

    History of Moldova
This region, historically known as Bessarabia, has changed hands many times. After being Turkish for many years it became Russian in 1810. In 1917 it proclaimed independence before joining Romania in 1918. In 1940, under the terms of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, it once more became Soviet. The territory was joined to the pre-existing Moldavian ASSR, a Soviet fiction carved out of Ukraine which in fact had very few Moldavians living there (this is the origin of the dispute between the modern Republic of Moldova and the self-styled Dniestr Republic, the largely Slavic-populated eastern region) and became the Moldavian SSR on 2 August 1940. From 1941 until 1944 Romania, allied to the Axis powers, once again ruled Bessarabia. Post war, the Soviets created a largely artificial Moldavian language (largely accomplished by transcribing Romanian from the Latin alphabet into Cyrillic) and sought to encourage the creation of a separate Moldavian nation. This fiction could not disguise the fact that the Moldavians are essentially Romanian, and although Moldova's initially expressed aspiration of union with Romania is now much more muted, the Moldovan flag is basically that of Romania with the addition of the national coat of arms on the yellow stripe.
