Kishinev - Capital of the republic of Moldova, part of the former Soviet Union, became a flourishing Jewish center in the 18th century, when the growing economy presented new commercial and industrial opportunities. Jews have been living in Moldova since the end of the fourteenth century. The first Jews in Moldova were Sephardi. By the turn of the century Jews owned a score of factories employing thousands of Jewish workers; there were 16 Jewish schools with 2,100 students, and 70 synagogues. The name Kishinev, however, was thrust into the consciousness of the world on Easter Day, 1903 when 49 Jews were massacred by frenzied mobs.
Hundreds more were seriously injured; thousands were left homeless and property damage was measured in millions of gold rubles. Public outrage was expressed in protests which echoed throughout every civilized capital of the world. In 1905 Kishinev was again the scene of unspeakable horror and violent death when a second pogrom claimed the lives of another 19 Jews.

Moldova - film came into being as a discernible cinematic trend with Khruschev's thaw, producing the genre of the "Moldova poetic film." This style of cinema combined romance with the realist traditions of Soviet film-making practice, which gave documentary films particular importance. Names who emerged in this hay-day included Emil Loteanu, Valeriu Gagiu and Vlad Iovitsa.
In the stagnation years of the 1970s, Moldova filmmakers had to work under more hostile conditions as the precepts of Socialist Realism were once again enforced by studios. Further political change again influenced cinema, and glasnost allowed Moldova cinema to blossom in the late 1980s again as a new degree of freedom came. Whilst politics influenced Moldova cinema in the Soviet era, economics have been the primary force since independence, and the number of features made in the last decade barely scrapes into double-figures.
That Moldova film-making can survive even in through dark times was demonstrated by the highlight of the Moldova cinema series - an old classic from some of the more restrictive years of film-making, Emil Loteanu's Tabor ukhodit v nebo (The Gypsy Camp Vanishes into the Heavens, 1976), upon which the country's international reputation largely rests.

OUR HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS
THE CZAR'S CONCEPT After having reconquered Moldova from the Turks in 1813, Czar Alexander invited French winemakers to Moldova as colonists and produce quality wines. Today, history is repeating itself. Foreign oenologists are invited once again to come to Moldova to assist in the renaissance of the traditional Moldavian wines. Join us in these efforts by becoming our partner to position these wines on the international markets. Vino Vitis Ltd. In the recent years Moldova has benefited major investments in the wine industry. The state owned wineries changed into private hands. Private initiatives were taken in order to switch from mass production to quality awareness Australian company «Southcorp wines» and famous French Winemakers as Jacques Lurton and Hugh Ryman implemented «learning by doing» programs, where technology and know how were exchanged. This process resulted, thanks to their assistance, at last in the fact that now local staff produces the majority of the actual quality wines in different wineries. Located east of Transylvania, the land of Dracula, surrounded by the rivers Nistru and Prut, placed at the gates of Europe to the CIS. That is the threshold of a wine Paradise called Moldova.

Parlamentul (parliament). Thus in 1998, a three-party coalition took control of the government with the PCRM as the principal opposition. However, in 2001, the PCRM recovered control of both the assembly, in which it now enjoys a substantial majority, and the presidency. Vladimir Voronin is the new President, and Vasile Tarlev the Prime Minister.
The main priority for the government, meanwhile, is the state of the economy. Relations with the IMF and the World Bank have been difficult and the country seems set to remain among the poorest in Europe for the time being. (see Economy section).

BRIEF HISTORY
The territory of Republic of Moldova encompassing an area between Prut and Nistru Rivers and the Black Sea was populated in ancient times by geto-daci tribes. In the 1 st Century B.C. the first state of geto-daci was established by Burebista (82-44 B.C.) who was a remarkable strategist, military man, organizer and diplomatist. By the middle of 1 st Century B.C. this state established itself as the main political and military power in Central Europe. However, being involved in conquest wars waged by the Roman Empire, the state created by Burebista soon following the death of the latter fell to the Romans. Decebal, Burebista’s successor killed himself and this territory was transformed into a Roman colony. Throughout the first millenium B.C. Moldova was populated and successively inhabited by different migratory people such as: Goths, Huns, Slavs, Bulgarians, Hungarians, etc. Following the Tartar invasion (1242) the whole region becomes politically controlled by the Golden Horde. The first independent Moldovan State was established in 1359 by Bogdan I and comprised the territories between the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Nistru River, Black Sea and Danube. The fact that Moldova Principality was at the confluence of Russia, Austria and Turkey which disputed the supremacy in South-Eastern Europe, largely explains the territorial rupture subsequently carried out by large imperial powers.

A brief history of RI A Brief History
The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later. As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving the professional and social interests of club members. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its principal motto: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.

http://www.amsterdamtelevisie.nl/molhist.htm
THE HISTORY OF
MOLDOVA OR BESSARABIA
The history of Moldova is complicated by the fact that the republic's present-day territory was not called Moldova or Moldavia until 1940. Present-day Moldova occupies the central two-thirds of a region historically referred to as Bessarabia. A region made famous by the late singer Leo Fuld in his song 'Bessarabia'. But for centuries the name Moldova referred to a larger area encompassing Bessarabia, stretching from the Black Sea in the south to Bukovina, a former province of Romania, in the north, from the Siret River in the west to the Dnestr in the east. Moldova Holland Moldova has a long history of foreign relations. Established in the 15th century by King Stefan the Greatest, it fell in the 16th century under Ottoman suzerainty. Part of the north was added to the Austrian Empire in the 18th century. From 1812 to 1856 Russians occupied the eastern part of Moldova, which they renamed Bessarabia. After Bessarabia was returned to Moldova in 1856, Moldova and Walachia were united to form the Kingdom of Romania in 1859. The territorial integrity of the new Romanian state did not last long. In 1878 Russian forces reannexed Bessarabia, which remained part of the Russian Empire until 1917.

The history textbook project: Moldavia (Moldova)
The history textbook project pops up somewhere every day in the world. Moldavia (Moldova) is today's special, being the subject of a long article in the New York Times (2/25/02). Romanian-speaking Moldavia was part of the USSR until the breakup. There was rejoicing when democracy and capitalism prevailed, but soon disillusionment with both spread. Disillusionment is a common political phenomenon. I was in Madrid in 1931 when the republic was proclaimed amidst unbridled euphoria. Disillusionment soon set in, and the result was civil war. We must beware of this phenomenon. Argentines are disillusioned. After a decade, the Communists returned democratically in Moldavia, and instituted educational reforms. The previous regime had abandoned Soviet-era textbooks and substituted the history of Moldavia in a Rumanian rather than a Soviet context. (I had written "Romanian", but the Eudora spell-check prescribes "Romania, Rumanian". Does that make sense?) Now the neo-communists went into reverse gear, reimposed the study of Russian and textbooks written in a Soviet context. The result has been massive street riots by students. This is a perfect example of the relationship between history textbooks and politics. Teachers are fighting, students are frustrated and confused. Ronald Hilton - 2/26/02

His column, At the End of history, appears alternate Fridays on Antiwar.com.Previous articles by Chad Nagle. Red Dawn in moldova? 3/16/01.
http://www.antiwar.com/nagle/n031601.html
March 16, 2001 Red Dawn in Moldova? I n late winter, the countryside of tiny and largely forgotten ex-Soviet Moldova looks a bit like the aftermath of Stalin’s scorched earth policy during the retreat from the Germans in World War II. The low rolling hills are covered with barren orchards and untended vineyards, the higher peaks dusted with dirty snow. In endless rows, short shrubs reach up out of the ground like the ghastly twisted claws of once-angry, now-dead subterranean trolls, and the abandoned fields range in color from brown to gray to almost black. Dotted around the wasteland are small villages that look mostly empty as you drive through them. Occasionally, a local inhabitant can be seen trudging along the side of the road carrying heavy sacks, wearing a facial expression of half-anger, half-confusion. Children in grubby clothes, mangy dogs, and other stray animals run around in the softening mud. Amid the gloomy squalor and desolation, a billboard for Western cigarettes may rise suddenly out of nowhere, depicting young and ostensibly fashionable glamour pusses sitting at a disco bar laughing their heads off.
