Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LCMB)
Lawrence E. Samelson, M.D. , Chief
samelson@helix.nih.gov
The Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LCMB) investigates normal cellular signal transduction and aberrancies in receptor-mediated signaling that are associated with neoplasias in humans and model systems. LCMB members study the role of oncogenes, growth factors, receptors and downstream effector molecules in neoplastic and normal cellular activation and proliferation. The goal of these studies is to define cellular activation pathways, to identify mechanisms which determine cellular differentiation or induce cancer, and to provide possible diagnostic and preventative measures to utilize at the clinical level. Current members of the Laboratory study such topics as lymphocyte activation, plasma cell biology, the Wnt pathway, receptor tyrosine kinases, TGF- b receptor signaling, and regulation of chemotaxis. Principal investigators in the LCMB are Carole A. Parent Jeffrey S. Rubin Stuart Rudikoff Ying Zhang , and Lawrence E. Samelson.

A Molecular Biology Glossary A Quick and Dirty Reference to Terms Used in Molecular Biology Dr. Robert H. Lyons, Director
University of Michigan DNA Sequencing Core This document is intended to provide a quick reference for molecular biology terms. It does not go into depth on the terms, but can be useful if you are trying to understand a typical seminar or paper. For further information on any of these topics, please consult one of the standard cell and molecular biology textbooks (for example, "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al., 4th ed., Garland Science, New York NY, ISBN 0-8153-3218-1). July 2, 1998 Several of the definitions refer to the following diagrams: Figure 1: Nucleotide structure. Figure 2: DNA strands are antiparallel
(the 5' end of one strand pairs with the
3' end of the opposite strand). Figure 3: RNA transcription. RNA is synthesized in the 5' to 3' direction from a DNA strand which runs in the antiparallel direction (3' to 5'). In this diagram, the top DNA strand is the sense strand, and in sequence would read the same as the RNA (except with T's instead of U's). The bottom strand is the anti-sense strand, and acts as the template for transcription. Figure 4: A typical gene.

The Euromoss project itself is entitled "Hormone-mediated regulation of cellular development in the moss Physcomitrella patens". Information requests about this program should be directed to Trevor Wang at the John-Innes Institute UK which acts as a co-ordinator ( WANG@BBSRC.AC.UK This servi ce provides the addresses of Euromoss participants and with a bibliography on moss biology. Background to EUROMOSS The collaborative project linking laboratories across Europe to study the molecular biology of Physcomitrella patens was conceived in March 1991 at the 'Mosses '91' meeting at Heidelberg. At that time the project was not defined but the intention to submit to the Commission affirmed. Norwich was elected to co-ordinate the project whose complete membership still had to be agreed.

RotorGene by Corbett Research - Real-time Quantitative Thermal Cycler

    Jun 6, 2002

The RotorGene is the first Real-time centrifugal thermal cycler using standard 0.2ml tube format! The samples are heated and cooled in an air chamber. The RotorGene collects fluorescent energy of each sample while spinning and is used to quantitate DNA and RNA copy number. The RotorGene detects point mutations using melt curve data.
    T3 Thermocycler
    Jun

The T3 Thermocycler offers the unique solution of 3 independently operating sample blocks in a compact housing. Each block can be used independently in combination with another program allowing the user to run three different protocols at the same time. The triple block format also dramatically increases the capacity of any lab because three different users can work simultaneously with one instrument.
