Culture and the Arts
The long tradition of artistic patronage by the Princes of Monaco has been perpetuated under the reign of Prince Rainier III. All the arts are favoured, with an ongoing concern for the discovery and encouragement of young talent, for the maintenance of a balance between demands for artistic quality and the necessity for a well thought out adaptation of forms of expression and creation in harmony with modern times.
In 1953, The Sovereign Prince ordered the reconstruction of Fort Antoine, which had been partially destroyed in 1944 during the last war. Thus transformed, Fort Antoine has become an open air theatre for the Summer artistic season, with varied shows every Monday.
In 1954, The Prince inaugurated "Tele Monte-Carlo".
In 1956, by Order in Council, the Municipal Music School, created in 1933, became the "Académie de Musique Fondation Prince Rainier III".
On August 19, 1959, the Sovereign Prince welcomed, for the first time, in the prestigious setting of the Court of Honour of the Palace, the National Orchestra of the Monte-Carlo Opera, which went on in 1980 to become the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. 1959 thus saw the beginning of the "Concerts at the Princely Palace", which take place on Summer evenings (July-August), with the participation of the greatest conductors and soloists.
In 1961, with the creation of the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Prince Rainier underlined the importance of this promising form of communication with a surprising development scale. A major event in the television world, this festival, with a coinciding market, has acquired an international reputation, and presents a wide and complete range of categories of modern day television. Since June 1, 1988, the festival has been chaired by H.S.H. The Crown Prince Albert.

      Tales and Legends of Europe

      Monaco
Monaco and the legend or passion of Saint Devote (Xith century), by Claude Passet
      The Passion of Saint Devote.
Euticius learning that the young Christian Devote was thus mortifying her soul by fasts, called her to him, saying: "Young girl, why do you inflict yourself with so many fasts and martyr your soul by your abstinences?" The blessed Devote replied: "I do not afflict my soul, but I feed it with various delights, because God who is in heaven satisfies my appetite each day with the gift of his kindness". Euticius, overcome by fear, had nothing more to say to that and could not stand the brightness of her face.
A short while afterwards, the governor Barbarus was making his way towards this same island with his fleet of ships, he descended there to make a sacrifice to the gods. And when all the noblemen of this place were brought there, and amongst them the senator Euticius, they began to sacrifice or to offer incense to their gods.
Saint Devote on hearing this let out long sighs from deep within her heart due to their heresy. And whilst they were all gathered and occupied with drinking, and the governor Barbarus was speaking about the persecution of the Christians, he was told by his guards that there was a young girl in the house of the senator Euticius who mocked their gods and refused to sacrifice. So the governor Barbarus said to Euticius: "I hear that in your house you have with you a young girl who neglects our gods and honours I don't know which Christ who was crucified by the Jews". To this Euticius replied: "I could never persuade the young girl of whom you speak to accomplish the offertory to our gods. If you gave me all your fortune it could not be compared to his great merit".

    Cinderella (Cendrillon)
    Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
    Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
April 29-May 3, 2003 Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo brings its acclaimed production of Cendrillon (Cinderella) , choreographed by French director Jean-Christophe Maillot, to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). In re-imagining Cinderella , Maillot exhibits his customary flair for quicksilver attenuated movement. He eschews the tale's customary classical trappings cartoon-like lords and ladies, stepsisters whose cruelty verges on caricature focusing instead on the grandeur of Prokofiev's score, and on the pivotal relationship between Cinderella and her mother, a.k.a. her fairy godmother. Here, on a stage defined by luminous panels that recall the tantalizing pages of a book, Cinderella's mother comes to riveting life as a glamorous and authoritative spirit. And, as envisioned by Maillot, the beloved heroine, often portrayed as a maddeningly passive victim of circumstance, gets a liberating psychological makeover. This is a Cinderella with edge, who triumphs over her surroundings using her newfound belief in the power of love. Cinderella is not only a fairy tale character, Prokofiev said, but also a living being, who feels and lives, and whose fate moves us". Following the example of this essentially human vision, Jean-Christophe Maillot toys with the natural and the supernatural to unfold this great picture book which is to us both familiar and unfamiliar. Guided by the memory of her mother, Cinderella opens her own path, searching for recognition and love, amongst the tragic excessiveness of a court with a sophisticated attractiveness.
