The Principality of Monaco is one of the smallest states in Europe, measuring only 1.95 square miles. It is nevertheless a full member of the
United Nations.
This independence, unequivocally recognized since the 16th Century, was won, then protected thanks to the intelligence, courage and tenacity of the Grimaldi Dynasty, which has ruled the Rock for more than 700 years! Un Etat Souverain
Le français est la langue officielle, mais l'italien et l'anglais sont aussi communément compris et parlés. La langue monégasque est utilisée par les "anciens" et enseignée aux plus jeunes dans les écoles de la Principauté.

Monaco, a police state?
... Visiting Monaco-the Palace-the Cathedral and princess Grace Let’s first look at the princedom through its world known geography. It is characterized by the 1. old, but in the mean time outgrown harbour for super-luxury yachts. Eastwards it is flanked by 2. Monte Carlo with its casino and the legendary hotel de Paris, on the west side 3. the Rock with the princely palace, the cathedral and the legendary musee océanographique. Behind the old port runs the boulevard Albert 1r after which the 4. Condamine begins, which means the Monaco shopping centre, shortly said, the centre of the town. Finally, behind the rock lies Fontvielle where the genie of the prince created a new yacht harbour, a gigantic sports stadium and complete new series of high rise buildings built on ground conquered on the sea. Port of Fontvielle "To live in Monaco, all you need is good taste and a lot of money" proclaims the principality's "Society" magazine". And Monaco boast and idyllic natural setting , glamorous residents , Americanised culture and international cuisine. Do you know a country that small (195 ha) in the whole world, so famous and mediatized as Monaco? Mere creativity cannot compete with financial talk. Residents of Monaco have the highest per capita income in the world and given its size, Monaco arguably has the greatest ratio of banks in the world. Myriads of souvenir shops, tourist groups in close order, dreaming in this operetta decorum about the tempestuous love affairs of Stephanie de Monaco or the beautiful but sad idylls of Grace Kelly and prince Rainier, as well as Caroline and Stefano (if this liaison is still on at the moment of this post ;-))

Grace, Caroline and Stephanie Fan page for mother and daughters, with chattybios. monaco's history and Royalty Photos galore of Caroline and her family.
http://www.who2.com/princesscaroline.html
PRINCESS CAROLINE OF MONACO Royalty Caroline is the eldest child of Monaco's Prince Rainier and his wife Princess Grace (the former movie star Grace Kelly). She has two siblings: Albert (b. 1958) and Stephanie (b. 1965). Caroline inherited her mother's beauty and early on became a favorite with the European society press. After the untimely 1982 death of her mother, Caroline became the ceremonial (if unofficial) first lady of Monaco. Caroline's first husband was French banker and playboy Philippe Junot; they were married in 1978 and divorced in 1980. She then was married to Italian industrialist Stefano Casiraghi from 1983 until his death was in a power-boat racing accident in 1990. In 1999 she married Prince Ernst August of Hanover; their daughter, Alexandra, was born later that year.
Extra credit : Caroline had three children with Stefano Casiraghi: Andrea (b. 1984), Charlotte (b. 1986) and Pierre (b. 1987)... As the eldest male child, Caroline's brother Albert is heir to Prince Ranier. However, Monaco's constitution was changed in 2002 so that if Albert dies without children, the throne will pass to Caroline and on to her children with Casiraghi.

Introduction Genealogy Contact us The Grimaldi Despite their infighting, the Genoese were of a single mind in the area of exploiting commerce and banking opportunities. In 1284, for instance, Genoa crushed its Mediterranean rival Pisa, and in 1298, it defeated the Venetian fleet. As a result, the Mediterranean became largely a "Genoese Lake." This commercial empire was the western tip of the Silk Road, and stretched from the Black Sea and India, to Spain (Barcelona), England (London) and Flanders (Bruges). The Grimaldis emerged from the Crusades as one of the major families of Genoa. In the midst of one of the numerous political struggles (1270), the Albergo By 1333, the Grimaldi family had grown to about 110 adult members. The extraordinary epic of this family is one of remarkable political, military, and business leadership, as well as intrigues, duels, defeats, assassinations, exiles, rebounds, and farytale romances. Grimaldo was the son of Otto Canella, who was a consul of Genoa in 1133. In turn, Grimaldo raised to become consul, several times, in 1162, 1170, and 1184. He also served as ambassador to Morocco in 1169.

It's Williams, official representative of Molsheim, in his green Bugatti 35 B who won this first G.P at an average speed of 80,104 kilometres per hour.
With the Mans 24 hour and the Indianapolis 500, the Monte-Carlo Rally and the Monaco Grand Prix constitute two of the four great automobile sports events most known to the world at large.
The smallest European state, after the Vatican City, has seen the efforts and imagination of its leaders well rewarded. The appearance of the Monaco Grand Prix on international calendars is the undeniable result of a determined sports policy of the Grand Prix's President Anthony Noghes. In fact it ail goes back to the mid-twenties, when Antony Noghes and his friends set up the Automobile Club de Monaco, an association which stemmed from the Sport Automobile et Vélocipédique, which itself already goes back as far as the Sport Vélocipédique Monégasque founded in 1890.

Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Monaco and the world Order Now
Monaco History Monaco's history is pretty much the history of the Grimaldi family. The country is their private playground, and they are its raison d'etre - a 1918 treaty with France states that, should the Grimaldis die out, Monaco will become an autonomous state of France. In 1489 King Charles VIII of France recognised Monaco's independence. Although they were leading separate lives, and despite Monaco's brief flirtation with Spanish dominance between 1524 and 1641, France and Monaco remained close. Eventually, however, France's possessive nature got the better of it, and in 1793 the new Revolutionary regime annexed Monaco. A treaty signed in 1861 reinstated Monaco's independence, and bickering in recent decades has been restricted to the question of tax laws - Monaco refuses to tax French residents or French companies with their headquarters in Monaco. back to top

Alice Heine was born February 10, 1858 in New Orleans at 910 Rue Royale. The townhouse in which she was born and raised was constructed under the supervision of her maternal great grandmother, Madame Aimee Miltonberger. The three connected townhouses were completed in 1836. Alice's mother was Amelie Miltonberger who was the daughter of Madame Miltonberger's youngest son, Alphonse, an architect by trade as well as an entrepreneurial cast iron importer. He was very influential in introducing the trend of large cast iron galleries on French Quarter houses in the 1830's. By 1858, Alphonse had constructed the Carriage House and added the cast iron galleries to the three Miltonberger townhouses. He also retained the famous architect Henry Howard to design the hexagon tower which overlooks the Courtyard.
Michael Heine introduced his famously beautiful daughter Alice in Paris when she was 16.The most eligible bachelors begged for her hand. At 17, Alice married Duke Armand de Richelieu, a wealthy man many years older than Alice. Five years later the Duke died and Alice was a wealthy young widow embarking on her fabulous career as an international hostess.
Prince Albert, heir to the throne of Monaco, lived in Paris at the time and was a divorced man with a son. He courted Alice and they were married on October 30,1889, shortly after the death of his father. Alice's dowry was six million dollars, a fortune in that day. Reaching Monte Carlo, Alice was saluted by Bishop Theurat of Monaco as "the embodiment of virtue, charity and generosity."

57. The 700 Years Of Grimaldi
Commemorating the anniversary in 1997, here you will find information and history on the elegant principality. The parent site also has interesting information.
http://www.monaco.mc/monaco/700ans/index.html
The Principality of Monaco celebrates the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldi Family's reign In 1997, the Principality of Monaco celebrates the 700 years reign of the Grimaldi dynasty. It all began on January 8, 1297 when the Guelf Francois Grimaldi dressed as a Franciscan monk, seized the fortress protecting the famous rock and the port of Hercules. Surmounting the trials and tribulations of history and throughout the dark periods of foreign domination, the Principality has managed to affirm its identity and preserved its independence throughout the centuries due to the wise guidance of its Princes. Thus, at the threshold of the third millennium, it will celebrate its commitment and loyalty to the Grimaldi family, its territory and community. The Grimaldi dynasty has bequeathed Lords and then Princes to the Principality, illustrious in their many domains, who wrote the most enticing pages in the history of Monaco. To cite but a few : Rainier I, General Admiral of France ; Honore II, the first Prince of Monaco at the origins of the most important treaties with France ; Louis I, Ambassador to the Holy See under Louis XIV ; Antoine I, grand patron of the arts ; Charles III, founder of Monte-Carlo ; Albert I, renowned as the father of oceanography ; Louis II, the soldier Prince. Prince Albert unveils the 700 Years Official Logo On January 8, 1997, the official ceremonies of the 700th anniversary begin. According to the decree of His Serene Highness Prince Rainier III, the celebration will be "the living expression of the national unity of the nation", and will demonstrate once again the indisputable ties between the reigning family and the Monegasques "whose rich and authentic history will allow the new generation to find a newborn faith for the future". The organizational committee of the 700th anniversary is presided by His Serene Highness Hereditary Prince Albert.
