French Riviera History

The French Riviera is a major prehistoric site. In fact, several million years B.C. the French Riviera was inhabited by man. Traces of human activity have been found in the Tachou cave in Roquebrune Cap Martin.
300 000 years B.C. the first homes were built around the beaches of Terra Amata (now the site of Boulevard Carnot, to the East of the harbour in Nice).
200 000 years B.C. the Lazaret Cave (in Nice) was inhabited by hunters.
80 000 years B.C. Neanderthal man lived in the surrounding caves. Weapons dating from 30 000 years B.C. have been found in the Grimaldi grottoes, proving that Homo sapiens sapiens lived in this area. The oldest rock engravings of figures date back to 1800 years B.C. and are found in the "Vallée des Merveilles".
Between 900 and 600 years B.C. the Ligurian tribes came to inhabit the Riviera coastline. They left behind them a number of fortified constructions and rock paintings on Mount Bégo in the Vallée des Merveilles. Later on, with the arrival of the Celts, the inhabitants came to be known as the Celto-Ligurians.

Presentation
Looked upon as a temple of luxury and prestige, the Principality of Monaco is a world set slightly apart from the rest of the Côte d'Azur. Because of its economic boom, many sky-scrapers have appeared in the last decades, the only ones you'll see on the Riviera.
The Principality of Monaco is comprised of three main parts : Monaco (the Rock and Prince's Palace), La Condamine (a bustling shopping area at the foot of the Rock) and Monte-Carlo, the central area around the Casino with the classiest hotels.
A town that thrives on prestige, Monaco is a showcase of de-luxe boutiques with renowned designer names, and the most impressive collection of really enviable cars.
The new neighbourhood of Fontvieille, partly reclaimed from the sea, plays host to many business premises and a yacht harbor.

http://www.ciesm.org/about/histo.html
Madrid, 17 November 1919: CIESM is at last able, following the tragedy of the First World War, and nine years after its first meeting in Monaco - in March 1910 - to hold its Constitutive Assembly under the presidence of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Prince Albert the 1st of Monaco - the inspirator of the Commission who will become its first President - is at his side. The Conference is attended by Representatives of Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Monaco, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.
One notes, among the very first recommendations of the Commission to its Member States, the creation of marine stations, the consolidation of the existing ones, the preparation of a bathymetric map, studies on the biogeography of "useful species" and the systematic exploration of the Strait of Gibraltar and of the Bosphorus. The first issue of the CIESM Bulletin , later to be replaced by the series of CIESM Congress Proceedings which continues until now, appears on 15 January 1920. The ambitious publication, sheet after sheet, of the CIESM Atlas of the Mediterranean Fauna and Flora is also decided then.
