No armies in history have ever won so many battles or conquered so much territory. No army has ever provoked such justifiable terror and loathing in its victims, or slaughtered so many of its vanquished. What other army in history has marched on Russia in the winter and survived, let alone won victories? The stories of these and many other amazing feats of this 'barbarian' people are here brought vividly to life by Stephen Turnbull, from the birth of Genghis Kahn in the wind-swept steppes of Mongolia, through the conquest of China and beyond.

Summary

The Arab Conquest, 634-36 The followers of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, embarked on a movement to establish their religious and civil control throughout the eastern Mediterranean from their base in the Arabian Peninsula. Their determination to conquer other lands resulted both from economic necessity and from religious beliefs, which imbued them with contempt for death. Calling for a jihad (holy war) against non-Muslims, the Prophet's successor, Caliph Abu Bakr (632-34), brought Islam to the area surrounding Lebanon. Dividing his forces into three groups, he ordered one to move in the direction of Palestine, one toward Damascus, and one toward the Jordan River. The Arab groups under General Khalid ibn al Walid defeated the forces from in 636 at the Battle of Yarmuk in northwestern Jordan. Back to top The Umayyads, 660-750 After the Battle of Yarmuk, Caliph Umar appointed the Arab Muawiyah, founder of the Umayyad dynasty, as governor of Syria, an area that included present-day Lebanon. Muawiyah garrisoned troops on the Lebanese coast and had the Lebanese shipbuilders help him construct a navy to resist any potential Byzantine attack. He also stopped raids by the Marada, a powerful people who had settled in the Lebanese mountains and who were used by the Byzantine rulers to prevent any Arab invasion that would threaten the Byzantine Empire. Concerned with consolidating his authority in Arabia and Iraq, Muawiyah negotiated an agreement in 667 with Constantine IV, the Byzantine emperor, whereby he agreed to pay Constantine an annual tribute in return for the cessation of Marada incursions. During this period some of the Arab tribes settled in the Lebanese and Syrian coastal areas.

They were supported by squires, who fought only in an emergency, and professional calvary sergeants who were not members of the aristocracy. A code of behavior grew up, embodying all the characteristics of the ideal knight. He should be bold and brave, yet gentle, considerate, wise, and courteous. He should be a ruthless killer, but also fond of music, poetry and polite society. He should be inspired by the love of a beautiful woman, whom he worshiped from afar. He should be a good Christian, and follow the teachings of the Church. His manners should be perfect, his speech smooth and entertaining, his appearance manly, strong, energetic and elegant. Understandably, this ideal did not really exist. But he is a familiar figure in many medieval songs and stories, and tells us a lot about the qualities that people valued at the time. Chivalry, as this code of behavior is called, applied to the upper class only. Ordinary, rough soldiers were simply expected to shoot straight and obey orders.

HI 020 Handling the Land: Writing the History of Environmental Change
Reference Number: 8099
Environmental history is poised to take advantage of new technologies, and this course will apply several of these tools to the study of local landscapes, using Addison County as a case study. As communities have adapted to various economic and social stimuli, local change carried important long-term environmental implications. The associated adjustments in forest cover, agricultural patterns, and population densities over the last 150 years have all further affected the human experience of the land. Course work will assess the historical record both analytically and visually, through fieldwork, research projects, and mapping. HIS (S. Gregg)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a comprehensive survey of medieval society, culture, and politics. We will start off with a look at the collapse of the Roman Empire and Rome s lasting legacy on the three civilizations that arose on its ashes: Byzantium , the Islamic world, and the medieval West. We will pay special attention to the continual interactions among these three civilizations over the course of the Middle Ages. Our main focus, however, will lie on the idiosyncratic characteristics of medieval Western Europe . Topics covered in the course include: the rise and fall of Charlemagne s empire; the agrarian and the commercial revolutions; the crusades and the beginning of European political expansion as well as the emergence of a persecuting society; the crisis of the fourteenth century; the recurrent conflicts between popes and kings; the rise of the European monarchies; and the recovery of the classical intellectual heritage. COURSE FORMAT: The course will be conducted through a combination of lectures and discussions of selected primary sources. All students must come to class having read and reflected on the source(s), and are expected to participate actively in class discussion. Five full class periods will be
