I am Chaiya bat Avraham Toledano, a native of this city. I was born here 30 years ago, in 4965 (as we Jews reckon it). The Christians, who rule these lands under Fernando III, call the current year 1235. I see you are curious about our life here, as well you should be. It is seldom recorded in history a time when Christians, Muslims and Jews have lived together in such peace and prosperity. Our king and protector, Fernando III, and his son Alfonso, are understandably interested in the writings of the ancient Greek philosophers, which the Muslims have translated to Arabic. Many Jews are employed as translators and interpreters of these works. In addition, the Kingdom relies upon the wisdom of our sages, our diplomats, scholars, rabbis, poets, and physicians. We Jews, descended from the noblest of the tribes of Israel, have made a home here incomparable to any but Jerusalem of old. You may tour the city if you desire, or I can tell you more about our history and way of life here. Be most well come!

Don Croner's WorldWideWanders: Mongolia-For the Best Books plus Travel Accounts about Mongolia
I include here only books which I have read myself (and in almost all cases have actually bought myself) and would recommend to anyone interested in Mongolia.
Area Studies: Rene Grousset's door stop of a book The Empire of the Steppe , written in the 1930s and later translated from the French is now admittedly dated and dwells perhaps dwells at too much length about various armies "crushing" each other. Still, a necessary read for students of the area. Probably the best overall study of Inner Asia up to and including the rise of Chingis is David Christian's A History of Russia, Central Asia and Mongolia : Inner Eurasia from Prehistory to the Mongol Empire . Stops with the rise of Chingis; presumably another volume is on the way. This books is, however, not without a few errors about Chingis. Christian repeatedly states that Chingis Khan was a member of the Taichuud clan. In fact he was, famously, a member of the Kiyat branch of the Borjigin clan. True, at one time Chingis's father was the chief of a combined camp of Taichuud and Borjigin, but after his father's death, the Taichuud captured the young Chingis and probably would have killed him had he not managed to escape. Also see Thomas Barfield's The Perilous Frontier: Nomadic Empires and China : this is a densely written, scholarly study much quoted by other historians (including Christian) but is heavy going at times; still a must for serous Mongolophiles.

The “later Middle Ages” is broad time period, so we cannot cover everything. Thus, I have chosen to concentrate on specific themes such as religious conflict, both internal and between different religions; the affects of religious and political conflict on daily life and individuals; courtly love and gender relations; the environment and disease. For those students who have no background in the period and want a more fulsome and systematic coverage of the period, I have included two recommended texts, one, The New Penguin Atlas of Medieval History , which provides brief historical introductions to each period, and more importantly for the geographically challenged – MAPS! The second recommended book by Edward Peters is a general history of the Middle Ages which would be helpful to fill in those areas we will not be able to cover due to time constraints.

    Preambel
The writing of history in the Middle Ages is a topic of general interest to all medievalists; and it is a topic that has a strong national tradition within Scandinavia and also is in focus internationally. Crusading history and crusading ideology is a research area that has seen an immense growth internationally within the latest thirty years and is now increasingly becoming incorporated into Scandinavian medieval history, and the Danish Research Council for the Humanities has supported a three year project on Denmark and the crusading movement (1998-2001). It is the aim of this course to focus on medieval history writing mainly - but not exclusively - in a crusading context. It is also the aim to invite historians from Scandinavian universities to participate in a discussion about the future of research training in medieval history within the small research milieus that exist in Scandinavia.

The Secret History of the Mongols
Return to the main page "The Secret History of the Mongols" is the first literary monument concerning the Mongols. It is believed to have been written in the year 1240 A.D. The author of it still remains unknown. This is the only immediate source of information about medieval mongolian life and self-consideration and also it is the invaluable treasure for historians, linguists, ethnographs and ethnologist engaged in the field of oriental studies. The copy of The Secret History which has survived to our days were transcribed with Chinese characters from some original manuscript in one of the mongolian scripts. Some scholars believe it to be the Uighur script, others proposed h`Pags-pa script (Quadratschrift) only few think that it was originally recorded by Chinese characters. This copy was written about 14th century and contained Mongolian text (in Chinese fonetic transcription ) and the Chinese translation First man from Europe who discovered this manuscript was Russian archimandrite Palladij. He was a member of the Russian Orthodox Mission in China. He was an outstanding sinologist not mention his missionarial abilities. In 1866 he translated Chinese part of The Secret History into Russian with a considerable contractions. The name of this work in russian translation was "Ñòàðèííîå ìîíãîëüñêîå ñêàçàíèå î ×èíãèñ-õàíå" ("An old mongolian tale about Genghis Khan"). After that, the full text of the "Secret History" was published by S.A.Kozin in Leningrad (1941), E.Haenisch in Berlin (1948), P.Pelliot in Paris (1949). Very important works were the dictionary of the language of the Secret History of the Mongols (Haenisch E. 1962) and the index to the manuscript compiled by Igor de Rachewiltz (1972).

    Medieval Sourcebook:
[from Walsh] Although Tatar [or Mongol] troops had defeated those of the Russian princes in 1228 this had been only a reconnaissance in force and the Tatars had withdrawn without attempting to follow up the victory. They returned in 1236, however, and within less than four years brought all the Russian principalities, except Novogorod, under their dominion. Tatar control of the Russian lands lasted almost two and one-half centuries and had very important, far-reaching consequences. The following description of the Tatars was written in 1243. [spelling slightly modernized - Halsall] from Richard Hakluyt, The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation. Readings in Russian History , (Syracuse NY: Syracuse University Press, 1948) This text is part of the Internet Medieval Source Book . The Sourcebook is a collection of public domain and copy-permitted texts related to medieval and Byzantine history. Paul Halsall Mar 1996
