Presidential Trivia Ronald Reagan was the only divorced President. William Howard Taft was the first President to own a car. When Harry Truman left office in 1952 he got in his own car and drove himself back to Missouri. The only non-Presidents to adorn US currency are: $1 coin, Susan B. Anthony; $10 bill, Alexander Hamilton; $100 bill, Benjamin Franklin; $10,000 bill, Salmon P. Chase. The reason Maryland did not seceed from the Union in 1865 was that President Lincoln had the state legislators arrested. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first U.S. President to have a presidential aircraft. He only flew on the airplane, a specially equipped Douglas DC-4 nicknamed "The Sacred Cow," once; to travel to the Yalta Conference during World War II. It was equipped with an elevator so that the president could board the plane while remaining in his wheelchair. The aircraft currently is on display at the USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio. Ronald Reagan was the oldest President elected to office. Only two U.S. Presidents and their wives are buried at the Arlington National Cemetery: John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and William Taft and his wife Helen Heron Taft. The first President to be a Navy veteran was John F. Kennedy. Tompkins (1774-1825), American political leader. Governor of New York and Vice President Of The United States, he was also a prominent reformer. Tompkins was born in Scarsdale, N.Y., on June 21, 1774. He graduated from Columbia College in 1795, was admitted to the New York bar in 1797, and was elected to the state legislature in 1803. The following year he was elected to congress but resigned to serve on the New York supreme court. Tompkins was U.S. vice president under James Monroe from 1817 to 1825. In 1824, Congress reimbursed him for personal losses in public service, a vindication of charges that as governor he had mismanaged state and federal funds during the War of 1812. He died in Staten Island, N.Y., on June 11, 1825. Did you know. . . ? In 1820 a girl was born named Susan B. Anthony who became one of the most recognized woman for "woman's suffrage". Her tireless campaign for woman's suffrage made her a leader in the first wave of American feminism. The daughter of Quaker abolitionists, Susan B. Anthony was incensed that women were barred from speaking at temperance meetings. She barnstormed for equality and was insulted, vilified, even pelted with rotten eggs for her trouble. After brazenly casting a vote in 1812, she was arrested and fined $100 (which she never paid). The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, 14 years after her death, finally confirmed her credo: "Failure is impossible." Susan B. Anthony died in 1906, and is found on some of the U.S. minted dollar coins.
