U.S. Hot Rod Thunder Nationals, a weekend of leather clothes, mullet haircuts and family entertainment, featured monster trucks in their own crushing ballet. In 1984, the Battle of the Monster Trucks started with a race-style competition. In 1987, the Hot Rod Association created the first series of racing competition. Dean and a van full of fifth- and sixth-grade boys, kept Heather Misener of Lansing company during the show. Before the engines roared, the audience waited in anticipation for Cannon Lady Jennifer Schneider to start the show with her soaring feat. She exploded into the air from a cannon, flying up to about 75 feet into a net across the arena. Her husband Rob Schneider did his own flying later in the evening, jumping over four monster trucks on his motorcycle. By the end of the night, rows of cars were victimized by the oversized trucks in a race.
