I ndependent ... IV. DETC Accredited High School Programs I. PROPER ACCREDITATION Important: Read this before you proceed! Accreditation is important as a way of validating a given school, or department within a school; it proves the organisation has been thoroughly investigated by a group of impartial experts and found worthy of approval. Accrediting agencies will investigate the mission statement of the organisation, require proof that the school is living up to its mission goals, met its academic standards, and also look into the financial standing of the academic institution. In most other nations, colleges and universities are chartered by their national or provincial governments. Eg., the UK the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council assesses distance learning programs. But the bad news is that investigating accreditation of US schools can be really confusing, like opening a can of worms. There are many different accrediting agencies. Also beware that many "unaccredited" US schools call themselves accredited in their prospectuses and websites.. You really need to understand what the recognised accrediting agencies are. For example, the Department of Education does not accredit any school or institution, it merely "licenses" it or approves it as fulfilling certain legal requirements in order to exist at all, ranging from incorporation to certification or other state approval. Many schools which call themselves accredited private schools are in fact "licensed" schools.

About Photovoltaics
Photovoltaic (or PV) systems convert light energy into electricity. The term "photo" stems from the Greek "phos," which means "light." "Volt" is named for Alessandro Volta (1745-1827), a pioneer in the study of electricity. "Photovoltaics," then, could literally mean "light-electricity."
Most commonly known as "solar cells," PV systems are already an important part of our lives. The simplest systems power many of the small calculators and wrist watches we use every day. More complicated systems provide electricity for pumping water, powering communications equipment, and even lighting our homes and running our appliances. In a surprising number of cases, PV power is the cheapest form of electricity for performing these tasks. Photovoltaics Sites Montana Residential Solar Electric Demonstration Project

We also need to know when and why students leave, and to identify the policies that effectively keep kids in school. It may be worth noting that the three AA high schools with the lowest dropout rates do not automatically suspend kids with a certain number of unexcused absences. (Dropout Rates in the United States, U.S. Dept. of Education 1990) Small schools tend to have lower dropout rates, which is credited partly to the personal attention possible in small schools, and partly to the lack of options for a teenager in a small town. Frenchtown reported a phenomenally low 1% dropout rate for 1995-1996, while the average for schools its size was 3.9%. (OPI)

Bozeman is the home of Montana State University, one of the West's most dynamic institutions of higher learning. In recent years, the university has become a regional center for research and development of new technology as well as innovations in tele-communications, laser physics and engineering. More than 11,500 students from all 50 states and 75 foreign countries are enrolled at MSU. Bachelors degrees are offered in 47 fields with a masters degree in 41 fields and a doctorate in 13. Montana State University is a land grant university with units in Great Falls, Billings and Havre.
The Bozeman Public Schools involve two districts, the elementary and the high school. In Bozeman there are six elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school and an alternative high school. The elementary schools host between 300 and 500 students each, the two middle schools have between 500 and 600 each and Bozeman High School has an average enrollment of over 1900 students. Twice named an outstanding school by the U.S. Department of Education, the high school consistently graduates students with above average SAT scores. 65% of graduates go on to college. Bozeman High School has an outstanding music department and the High School Marching Band represented Bozeman in the 1999 tournament of Roses Parade. The high school offers a well-rounded program of academics, art, music, drama, speech and athletics. One of the important links in the Bozeman school system is the interaction and connection between school and parents. Many parents participate as volunteers in the classroom, or in auxiliary programs supporting the schools and students.

Check Against Delivery Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join you today as you discuss an issue of critical importance to the state of Montana - the development of alternative energy sources. I appreciate seeing all of you here as we move forward with discussions about alternative energy opportunities in Montana. I want to introduce to you Mark Lindberg. Mark recently came on board with the Office of Economic Opportunity as the state's energy specialist. Mark has a great background with electric cooperatives, and will play a key role as we move forward with both alternative and traditional power expansion in our state. In this day and age, and in light of the tragic events of September 11, we as a nation must look internally for opportunities to supply our own energy sources. Montana is a state with incredible potential - and with a responsibility - to supply food, fiber, and power throughout America and the world. Our society has an increasing appetite for energy. With the increase in computer usage, air conditioning, microwaves and all the amenities in life we enjoy, is it really a surprise that energy consumption has increased?

http://www.umt.edu/law/welcome.htm
T he University of Montana School of Law offers an alternative to big, urban law schools. Each year, we enroll approximately 80 students from across the country looking for a hands- on approach to legal education, where students and faculty work closely inside and outside of class. The atmosphere is enhanced by the surrounding Rocky Mountains, where wilderness and recreation offer a break from the rigors of law study.
At UM, people are friendly, and there's a spirit of cooperation, not competition, among the students. We take pride in being a small, student-centered law school, where our faculty share their knowledge and insights gained from practice. Our curriculum is different, too. Since 1911, our goal has been to prepare competent practicing attorneys. While many law schools emphasize legal theory, we integrate theory with practical experience. You will draft contracts, create corporations, counsel clients, negotiate transactions, try a case to a jury and argue an appeal. You can do advanced work in environmental and natural resources law, Indian law, trial advocacy, dispute resolution and business law. You can even pursue joint law and graduate degrees in environmental studies public administration and business administration Because we're a small school, nearly everyone participates in one or more student organizations, such as our law reviews

by Claudette Morton and Charlene Loge
Early on in the work of the Montana Rural Education Center, there was a recognized need for some sort of a handbook or manual for rural school teachers who found themselves responsible for their school libraries. In cooperation with the Lucy Carson Library at University of Montana Western of the University of Montana, the Center first published such a work in the school year of 1982-83. Unraveling the Patchwork, a library guide for rural schools, was reprinted in 1983-84 because of demand. Since then much has changed. Libraries have become information centers, many have been automated, and all need to have electronic connections to the outside world. To determine exactly what was needed in the 1990's the Center and the Library undertook some much needed research. In 1991-1992, Ann Eifert, a library student, conducted a quantitative research project with rural schools regarding current library practices. She found that while rural libraries appeared to be moving toward centralization, "schools were plagued with outdated materials." The survey provided a great deal of other helpful information. With the conclusion of the Itinerant Library Network program there was renewed interest in taking what had been learned from that program and turning it into a rural school resource manual. Unfortunately, the funding was not available to do the work immediately and the students graduated and moved on in their careers. Every few months, however, the Montana Rural Education Center receives a request for an updated version of

Burned Area Recovery Project
Disagreement in defining dying trees
By Michael Howell
Contention over harvesting trees in the burned areas of the Bitterroot National Forest has brought national attention to the work now in progress following an agreement reached between the Forest Service, timber workers, and several environmental groups. Some of those interested are not content to base their judgments upon reports in the news media or from the Forest Service and have come to monitor things for themselves.
Members of Wild Rockies Earth First, an environmental activist group, have been involved in monitoring the situation on the ground even before the Forest Service began offering field trips into the harvest areas. Since that time, according to Forest Service spokesperson Dixie Dies, the bulk of participants in the scheduled tours have been members of Earth First. All this scrutiny makes timber contractor Bob Walker a bit nervous. Walker is harvesting on both the Roan-Burke and Elk Point timber sales while Pyramid Lumber is harvesting on the Bear sale. Walker claims to have an Earth First manual that describes how to sabotage large machinery. Walker also claims that intruders were observed by security personnel after dark in a closed area approaching a helicopter used in the logging operation. The intruders supposedly left when confronted by the guard.
