Eg., the UK the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council assesses distance learning programs. But the bad news is that investigating accreditation of US schools can be really confusing, like opening a can of worms. There are many different accrediting agencies. Also beware that many "unaccredited" US schools call themselves accredited in their prospectuses and websites.. You really need to understand what the recognised accrediting agencies are. For example, the Department of Education does not accredit any school or institution, it merely "licenses" it or approves it as fulfilling certain legal requirements in order to exist at all, ranging from incorporation to certification or other state approval. Bozeman is the home of Montana State University, one of the West's most dynamic institutions of higher learning. by Claudette Morton and Charlene Loge Early on in the work of the Montana Rural Education Center, there was a recognized need for some sort of a handbook or manual for rural school teachers who found themselves responsible for their school libraries. In cooperation with the Lucy Carson Library at University of Montana Western of the University of Montana, the Center first published such a work in the school year of 1982-83. Unraveling the Patchwork, a library guide for rural schools, was reprinted in 1983-84 because of demand. Since then much has changed. Libraries have become information centers, many have been automated, and all need to have electronic connections to the outside world. To determine exactly what was needed in the 1990's the Center and the Library undertook some much needed research. In 1991-1992, Ann Eifert, a library student, conducted a quantitative research project with rural schools regarding current library practices. She found that while rural libraries appeared to be moving toward centralization, "schools were plagued with outdated materials." The survey provided a great deal of other helpful information. With the conclusion of the Itinerant Library Network program there was renewed interest in taking what had been learned from that program and turning it into a rural school resource manual. Unfortunately, the funding was not available to do the work immediately and the students graduated and moved on in their careers. Every few months, however, the Montana Rural Education Center receives a request for an updated version of

Volume XVII, Number 34 Page One News Wednesday, March 20, 2002 Page One News at a Glance Burned Area Recovery Project Forest next battleground in war on weeds Four schools to run levies Commissioners contemplate new obscenity ordinances Burned Area Recovery Project Disagreement in defining dying trees By Michael Howell Contention over harvesting trees in the burned areas of the Bitterroot National Forest has brought national attention to the work now in progress following an agreement reached between the Forest Service, timber workers, and several environmental groups. Some of those interested are not content to base their judgments upon reports in the news media or from the Forest Service and have come to monitor things for themselves. Members of Wild Rockies Earth First, an environmental activist group, have been involved in monitoring the situation on the ground even before the Forest Service began offering field trips into the harvest areas. Since that time, according to Forest Service spokesperson Dixie Dies, the bulk of participants in the scheduled tours have been members of Earth First. All this scrutiny makes timber contractor Bob Walker a bit nervous. Walker is harvesting on both the Roan-Burke and Elk Point timber sales while Pyramid Lumber is harvesting on the Bear sale. Walker claims to have an Earth First manual that describes how to sabotage large machinery. Walker also claims that intruders were observed by security personnel after dark in a closed area approaching a helicopter used in the logging operation. The intruders supposedly left when confronted by the guard.
