Bill to weaken DUI law up for debate
By Courtney Lowery of The Standard State Bureau

HELENA A bid to weaken first-offense DUI penalties was slipped quietly into a bill designed to toughen DUI punishments, causing concerned lawmakers to set another hearing on Senate Bill 37 before it gets to the House floor.
A House Judiciary subcommittee amended SB 37, which increases DUI penalties, to shield first offenders from license suspension and from the conviction being public information. The new provision spurred House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Shockley, R-Victor, to call another hearing for the bill today.
`` We're going to hear all the complaints,'' Shockley said.
The Montana Insurance Association and the state Justice Department have voiced opposition to the amendment, which had gone unnoticed until recently. The Justice Department opposes it for several reasons, including the new language's murky compliance with federal regulations.
`` We do the dance to keep federal regulations,'' said Assistant Attorney General Brenda Nordlund. She said the provision could jeopar dize the state's commercial driver's license program and its federal highway funding.

Alternative School
Author/s: An alternative school is one that offers an approach to education that varies from the traditional structure of a group of students in a self-contained classroom learning from a predetermined course of study. Examples of alternative approaches include nongraded schools , where students are grouped for reasons other than chronological age or year in school; curriculum -based independent study, where each student pursues a unique course of study; and programs designed to manage behavior or other learning difficulties. The majority of alternative schools, according to the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools (NCACS), are private. Some public school districts are establishing alternative schools to educate at risk students. For example, in 1982, one public school district outside Baltimore, Maryland, established an alternative public school to educate troubled teenagers. Special programs included a "positive

Montana Adopts a New Method of Accreditation
T wo years ago, 18 Montana schools pioneered an alternative method to fulfill state accreditation requirements. These schools volunteered to participate in the state’s pilot of a school improvement process that empowers teachers and community members to translate their vision for improved student learning into accreditation standards. The pilot schools and their partners—the Montana Office of Public Instruction, the Montana Board of Education, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and NWREL—form the coalition MISTA: Montana Improving Schools Through Accreditation. Traditionally, Montana awarded accreditation based on a school’s ability to meet uniform state standards. But in March 1995 the state adopted an alternative method called Performance-Based Accreditation (PBA), which allows schools to meet state accreditation requirements through a locally delivered and locally controlled school improvement plan that focuses on improved student performance. According to the performance-based alternative standard, schools choosing to participate in PBA must complete five steps over a period of three to five years:

Bozeman Public Schools

top
At first glance, the Bozeman Public Schools might appear to be a typical small school district. Once you walk inside one of the Bozeman schools you will instantly feel the energy and enthusiasm that the teachers, students and administrators have for learning. The Bozeman Public school system covers an area larger than the city of Bozeman. The school involves two districts, Elementary District Number 7 and the Bozeman High School District. The school system is a public entity under the authority of the State. In Bozeman, there are six elementary schools, (K - 6), two middle schools, (6 - 8), a high school (9 - 12) and an alternative high school. There are about 5,100 students and 328 teachers. The outlying elementary schools include Cottonwood, LaMotte, Monforton, Gallatin Gateway, Anderson, Sedan, Malmborg and Ophir (Big Sky). The schools are governed by 7 elected Board of Trustees, and 2 trustees at large who are elected by citizens of the rural elementary districts.

THE MURAL-POETRY PROJECT Muldown School Whitefish High School '98 Laser School, Kalispell Whitefish High School '99 A story lies suspended, hidden within the picturesque beauty of our Valley. This unwritten narrative is the rainbow of ink flowing through the generations of our communities. It is the potential of uniting two viable and tremendously creative voices onto one page. An opportunity to re-connect wisdom and historical precedent to innocence and simplicity. A way to extend our heritage to all those that reside in, or are visiting our beautiful Valley. It is a work of art that is opaque, yet vibrantly alive within the stories and creativity of our youth and our senior citizens. Somewhere amongst the mad rush of progress, our communities seem to have suffered a loss of identity. Who we are the very nature of our humanity and sense of belonging TO something - has dissolved into separate, disconnected structures. The most awe-inspiring and aesthetic quality that exists in our surrounding landscape, is the captured simplicity and sinewy textures of wisdom that abound within the united story of our children and the elders of our communities. THE MURAL-POETRY PROJECT has opened a gateway to this enriching legacy. We have created a model project to present our society a view of the unique, interwoven thread that symbolizes the historic and artistic vein of our humanity. Re-presenting our communities in this capacity has connected our institutions, organizations, individuals and businesses with a community platform where ink, voice and color unite with the creative visions of all our generations , producing a work of art that completes the story we tell to the world.

Back to New Pages Education Revolution magazine site AERO's Amazing Schools Trip as reported by Peter Christopher Dear Friends! This recent trip, as readers may remember, was part of my volunteer work with the alternative education nonprofit AERO (educationrevolution.org). Jerry Mintz (Director of AERO) and I first touched down in Heathrow at the end of July, and quickly managed to locate Stephen, a charming highschool student from Montana who traveled with us. After seeing all London's greatest sites in one day, our entourage headed west. First real stop: Albert Lamb's. Albert is an alumnus of Summerhill School and editor of the magazine The Education Revolution published by AERO. At Albert's, discussion centered around future directions for AERO, organic gardening in England vs. Vermont, and whether "axer" is a legitimate scrabble word. Armed with my folding meditation bench, and guided by Albert's wife Popsy (also a Summerhill alumn) we then proceeded to hunt aliens in several English crop circles. All we found was barley, oats, oilseed rape (source of canola oil)
