Officials praise, blast school funding bills
By PETER JOHNSON Tribune Capitol Bureau HELENA Education officials praised one Senate public school funding bill Wednesday as visionary, predictable and generous and blasted a rival bill introduced for Gov. Judy Martz as deceptive, difficult to enforce and stingy. Four Martz administration officials were the only supporters to testify for Senate Bill 323, sponsored by Sen. Duane Grimes, R-Clancy. Nine representatives of teacher unions, school trustees, the Office of Public Instruction and the State Board of Public Education opposed it at the Senate Finance Committee hearing.

"Bring a Child to Work "

Time to go to work? This is a daily task that most adults do automatically, but for 8-to-12-year-olds, it can be a unique learning experience. This was the case when the Montana/Dakotas BLM State Office in Billings, Montana, scheduled a day for employees to bring a child to work. The BLM continuously strives to educate the public about our agency and its mission. At its most basic, the objective often is to get more just than a blank stare from kids when we ask the question, "What is BLM?" And how better to educate in this area than to gather together students, eager to learn about the world, and tell them what BLM is all about - in other words, bring them to work with us. BLM-Montana/Dakotas' "Bring a Child to Work" day was kicked off with a greeting from State Director Larry Hamilton. His enthusiastic comments set the stage for an energetic day of learning, challenging questions, and interesting answers. At the "Bring a Child to Work" kickoff assembly

The curriculum is targeted at grades 6-12, and is accessible through the organization's education web page. The curriculum provides weed activity ideas as well as a written script slide presentation that provides background information about noxious weeds. The Wisconsin Fast Plants Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has created a plant growth and development curriculum for all ages with complete teaching guides and information covering a variety of Fast Plants topics and activities. Information about curriculum and materials can be found at Wisconsin Fast Plants. The Montana Weed Project Teachers Handbook was sponsored by the Montana Energy Education Council and the Missoula County Conservation District. The curriculum was developed by REAP (Resource Education Awareness Project) and is an interdisciplinary environmental weed education curriculum for educators of 5th through 12th grade students. This innovative program is available through the Missoula County Conservation District. There is a charge for mailing the curriculum.

Best of History Web Sites aims to provide quick, convenient, and reliable access to the best history-oriented resources online in a wide range of categories. BOHWS has been designed to benefit history educators and their students, but general history enthusiasts will find the site useful as well. Best of History Web Sites contains links to over 800 history-related web sites that have been reviewed for quality, accuracy, and usefulness. Sites with engaging educational content and stimulating and useful multimedia technologies are most likely to be included in these pages. However, useful general resources and research-oriented sites have been included as well. The choice of categories and list of sites is, by nature, partial and by no means exhaustive. However, Best of History Web Sites continues to grow and more than fifty new sites were added between October 2002 and January 2003. Suggestions for sites to consider are welcome and appreciated. (BOHWS receives many suggestions, so please understand that it may be several weeks or more until your recommendation is reviewed.) To make any suggestions, comments, questions

New Student Info Over 130 years ago, explorer and entrepenuer John Bozeman was searching for a route from the Oregon Trail north to the burgeoning gold camps of the Montana Territory. In his explorations, Bozeman not only came upon what has become known as the Gallatin Valley in south-central Montana, but recognized the area's potential as one which could produce food to sustain those mining operations.
From those inspired but rocky beginnings, Bozeman, Montana has grown into a bustling community which remains true to its agrarian roots while becoming one of the leading educational and recreational areas in the United States. Over 50,000 people reside in the Gallatin Valley. Bozeman counts 30,000 residents, while countless thousands pass through the area each year taking advantage of its recreational opportunities and natural beauty.
Bozeman was certainly not the first white man to traipse through the Gallatin Valley. In the summer of 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, located the headwaters of the Missouri River, a half-hour west of present-day Bozeman. Mountain man Jim Bridger was also among the first whites in the area. He claimed to have hidden from Indians at the bottom of a creek for several hours while they searched for him above.
Like most western communities, Bozeman got a tremendous economic boost in the early 1880s, when the railroad linked the area with Yellowtone National Park, barely 10 years old.

Robotics in the Classroom?
The RB5X Educational Assistant is an educational tool capable of increasing a student's attention, comprehension, and motivation for learning in mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, and computer technology at all grade levels. An article titled "Push My Button" describes how the RB5X helped children increase their math and language skills, personal motivation, and intrigue for learning.
In a six month Controlled Study at Washington Elementary, Las Cruces, NM, sixth graders were found to increase their math comprehension by 40%, while girls of the same age and in the same period of time increased their math comprehension by 80%.
The RB5X excells in helping students learn English as a second language (ESL). In fact, the robot can speak any language. Using universal phonemes, children increase their language skills by teaching the RB5X to speak. Because the robot does not usually speak exactly the way the student expects the first time, the student teaches the robot to pronounce the words correctly.
The RB5X becomes the student and the student becomes the teacher.
