Funding Opportunities for Childcare Providers Getting Started in Childcare Are you interested in caring for children as your profession? In the State of Montana, you can care for up to 2 unrelated children, or all of the children from one family without being registered or licensed. If you want to care for more than two children or children from more than one family you are required to be either licensed or registered. There are three categories of regulated child care in Montana, family day care, group day care, and child care centers. Family day care providers must be at least 18 years of age. Family day care facilities can have up to six children, of which three can be infants and toddlers (0 - 36 months), and two of those can be infants (under 12 months). Family day care facilities require only one care provider and are typically located in a person's home.
