Welcome to the LEAP RDBMS home page.
LEAP is a full open source project: It's free to download; It's free to use; you have full access to the source code; and you can do what you like with it.
These web pages aim to introduce the curious browser to the various features found in LEAP . Existing users will find all the recent news and announcements.
What is LEAP?
LEAP
is an RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). It is used as an educational tool around the world to help students, and assist researchers and teachers as they study and teach databases.
How come it's free? Because it is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License , and no charge is made or expected. Whilst all distributions contain the full 'C' source code, you don't need to be a programmer to be up and running - it's known to compile and run without problems on practically all major Unix implementations. A Windows 95/NT GUI is also now available, which is precompiled and easy to get up and running.. There's a mailing list for users to ask questions and receive announcements, and a full demonstration of

We are a small group of people with interests in design and analysis of algorithms, computer algebra, combinatorial analysis and asymptotics. Problems with a discrete mathematics, computational, or combinatorial flavour surface regularly in the analysis of combinatorial randomness, itself central in the analysis of algorithms or of the behaviour of large random systems. We aim at general methods in combinatorics and analysis, with which classes of problems can be treated either semi-automatically or even automatically with the help of computer algebra. Typical instances of automatic analyses with our software packages are available here while theoretical background and further examples are detailed in our publications Our logo shows the behaviour in the complex plane of a generating function of connected graphs in a critical region. It illustrates one of the major centers of interest of our group, namely, the interplay between discrete combinatorial structures and analysis.

[Year 2000 Readiness Disclosure] LAPACK is written in Fortran77 and provides routines for solving systems of simultaneous linear equations, least-squares solutions of linear systems of equations, eigenvalue problems, and singular value problems. The associated matrix factorizations (LU, Cholesky, QR, SVD, Schur, generalized Schur) are also provided, as are related computations such as reordering of the Schur factorizations and estimating condition numbers. Dense and banded matrices are handled, but not general sparse matrices. In all areas, similar functionality is provided for real and complex matrices, in both single and double precision. In the aftermath of the unconscionable September 11 suicide attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Centre, an American newscaster said: "Good and evil rarely manifest themselves as clearly as they did last Tuesday. People who we don't know massacred people who we do. And they did so with contemptuous glee." Then he broke down and wept. Here's the rub: America is at war against people it doesn't know, because they don't appear much on TV. Before it has properly identified or even begun to comprehend the nature of its enemy, the US government has, in a rush of publicity and embarrassing rhetoric, cobbled together an "international coalition against terror", mobilised its army, its air force, its navy and its media, and committed them to battle.

    80. The History Of Algebra In The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries
    Topics include the contribution of David Hilbert, the origins of Emmy Noether's work, the spread and development of this field in Europe and the US, as well as modern algebra in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Will take place at Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) on 2125 April 2003 in Berkeley, CA, USA.

    The History of Algebra in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
    April 21, 2003 to April 25, 2003
    Organized by: Jeremy J. Gray and Karen Hunger Parshall
    Historians of mathematics have come to focus seriously on the history of modern algebra only within the last twenty-five years. That history originally tended to be done from the very technical point of view of the history of ideas, an approach typified in, for example, Morris Kline's massive Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times (1972), although Kline tended to give algebra in general rather short shrift in that work. In 1985, B. L. van der Waerden provided a more synthetic and focused account in A History of Algebra from al-Khwarismi to Emmy Noether, but while this work incorporated some biographical and broader historical analysis, it presented the development of algebra as a series of rather disjointed mathematical vignettes instead of in terms of a coherent historical and mathematical analysis. To date, no work has been written on the history of algebra in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that ranges widely over the complex and interacting factors that led to modern algebra.
    Some of the topics the workshop will address are:
    • the contribution of David Hilbert to modern algebra, his re-working of the ideas of Dedekind and Kronecker, and the role of his new formulation of the subject in guiding subsequent research;
