0366.1115 - ANALYTIC GEOMETRY
An undergraduate course
Subject matter: an analytic and computational description of Euclidian space, as complete as possible via elementary means.
Prerequisites: Linear Algebra 2, Calculus 2 (or taken concurrently).
Course requirements: Weekly exercise-sheet, handed-in every week. The exercises form an integral part of the course, account for 20% of the final grade, and form a prerequisite for the final exam (at least 10 solved sheets).

1. Introduction: basic building blocks, axioms and simple results of the structure of space. (5) 215-222 (7) 87-101
2. Vectors in space: addition, multiplication by a scalar, linear dependence. Vector space: unique representation in a given basis, dimension. Applications to geometric problems, (1) 87-92 (5) 1-6 (7) 102-110

You will normally get a homework assingment once a week (in the "tirgul" class). Turning homework in is NOT mandatory, however it is strongly recommended as a necessary condition for succeeding in the course.
Syllabus:
This is an introductory course in geometry. The name Analytic Geometry is to a great extent misleading since the course has very little to do with what is commonly called in highschools analytic geometry.

MT 0000 Col Algebra/Supp Instruc
MT 0103 Pre-Algebra Pre-Algebra is an entry level course for students in preparation for the Introductory/Intermediate algebra sequence. Students will gain a background in arithmetic and algebra topics through various presentation styles and group work. Topics to be covered include: fractions, solving linear equations, various applications in problem solving, the coordinate system, basic graphing and an introduction to polynomials. Placement in Pre-Algebra is determined by a student's score on the college's placement test (ASSET) and/or their mathematical background. When successfully completed (grade C or better), the course satisfies the college's prerequisite for Introductory Algebra.
MT 0105 Pre/Intro Algebra
MT 0203 Introductory Algebra Introductory Algebra is the first course in a two-course algebra sequence designed to prepare students for coursework in college level mathematics. Students will be introduced to basic algebra topics and the application of technology to those topics. Topics covered include: solving equations and inequalities, exponents, linear relations, the coordinate plane, modeling data, polynomials, domain, function notation and rational expressions. Many of these topics will be further developed in subsequent courses. When successfully completed (grade C or better), the course satisfies the college's prerequisite for Intermediate Algebra.

    G ENERAL I NFORMATION The Semi-Analytic Geometry Engine (SAGE) is a software prototype of a two dimensional computer system for meshfree analysis. The SAGE employs the R-function meshfree method (RFM), which allows all given boundary conditions to be satisfied exactly. For more information on the RFM and its computational infrastructure please visit Meshfree Modeling and Analysis project at the Spatial Automation Laboratory. Although, the method places no restrictions on the shape of the boundary portions where the boundary conditions are prescribed, this particular implementation can deal with polygonal domains only. This limitation is largely due to the user interface program, which was borrowed from known finite element analysis program FEHT . Future versions of SAGE will handle two- and three-dimensional domains with curved boundaries. The present release (Version 2.0) of SAGE is tuned to solve heat transfer and plate vibration problems on multiply-connected polygonal domains (i.e. polygons with holes).     G ENERAL I NFORMATION The Semi-Analytic Geometry Engine (SAGE) is a computer system for meshfree analysis. The present public release (Version 3.0) of SAGE is tuned to solve two-dimensional heat transfer and plate natural vibration problems on multiply-connected curved polygonal domains (i.e. polygons with holes bounded by linear edges and arcs). Other types of solvers, including linear elasticity and thermo-elasticity amongst others, are also available and will be released in the near future. Information of how SAGE can be used to perform other types of analysis, as well as its computational infrastructure, and numerical implementation can be found here The SAGE Version 3.0 is available in the Limited and Full editions. The Limited Edition restricts the complexity of the geometric models to not more than 25 boundary pieces (edges), and provides a fixed choice of the basis functions for each type of problem. The Full Edition allows unlimited numbers of edges, and provides a number of additional features disabled in the Limited Edition. Any number of basis functions may be chosen from arbitrary degree B-splines and variety of polynomial systems (classical, Legendre, Chebyshev, Bernstein, etc.). In addition, the Full version of SAGE allows an Internet-distributed analysis with solver residing on a remote host computer. The Full Edition is available upon request and is subject to approval.
