Note : See Technology Statement in the Introduction. The student must be strongly advised to complete this sequence at one institution. Transfer in the middle of the sequence is not recommended. If linear algebra is integrated into the sequence, the range of hours could be extended by two hours.     MATH 2400 3 credit hours
    Professor Jeffrey Fox, Department of Mathematics
    Third semester calculus comes up to, but never quite reaches, many of the basic ideas of modern differential geometry. In this section of calculus III we will expand our view of calculus and consider the topics of Math 2400 in a geometric context. The course will cover all of the topics in calculus II but we will emphasize the geometric interpretation of the new ideas in addition to the computational aspects. In particular, the concept of a surface is a unifying idea for much of calculus III and we will introduce it early into the course.
      Some of the geometric topics that we will cover which are not part of the standard calculus course include:
    • We will modify the notion of the length of a curve and see how different ways of measuring distance leads to the notion of curvature. We will study the traditional examples of positive, zero, and negative curvature surfaces corresponding to the sphere, the Euclidean plane, and the Poincare disk.
    • The sections on vector integration leads us to the very beautiful arena where modern topology joins forces with calculus. We will see how the notion of a surface, in conjunction with Stokes theorem, lets us understand some of the basic topology of surfaces.

    Did you know . . .? Analytic geometry brings together the analytical tools of algebra and the visual immediacy of geometry by providing a way to visualize algebraic functions . Descartes, a French philosopher and mathematician, did this through the introduction of the coordinate system that still bears his name, the Cartesian coordinate system. Descartes published his ideas in 1637 in a treatise called Geometry

    Descartes' Geometry was an appendix to a larger work called Discourse on the Method of Properly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking the Truth in the Sciences . In this work, Descartes set out to place human knowledge on a new, firm footing, an important task in an age beset with doubts and controversy and in which skepticism reigned. Descartes himself had seen service in warfare spurred by religious disagreements, and he was no stranger to scientific controversy, either.
