Numbers in very early societies were typically represented by groups of lines, though later different numbers came to be assigned specific numeral names and symbols (as in India) or were designated by alphabetic letters (such as in Rome). Although today, we take our decimal system for granted, not all ancient civilizations based their numbers on a ten-base system. In ancient Babylon, a sexagesimal (base 60) system was in use. The Decimal System in Harappa In India a decimal system was already in place during the Harappan period, as indicated by an analysis of Harappan weights and measures. Weights corresponding to ratios of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 have been identified, as have scales with decimal divisions. A particularly notable characteristic of Harappan weights and measures is their remarkable accuracy. A bronze rod marked in units of 0.367 inches points to the degree of precision demanded in those times. Such scales were particularly important in ensuring proper implementation of town planning rules that required roads of fixed widths to run at right angles to each other, for drains to be constructed of precise measurements, and for homes to be constructed according to specified guidelines. The existence of a gradated system of accurately marked weights points to the development of trade and commerce in Harappan society.

Radian Measure A radian is a unit of angle measure. The radian measure of a central angle of a circle compares the length of its intercepted arc with the length of the radius of the circle. One radian is the measure of a central angle of a circle that intercepts an arc whose length equals the radius of the circle. Given a central angle q in radians, s represents the length of its intercepted arc, with radius r: q s r or s = r q To change from degrees to radians: Multiple the number of degrees by To change from radians to degrees: Multiple the number of radians by Build Worksheet Arc Length Use the s = r q equation to solve these word problems. The following is a short review of spherical trigonometry, celestial navigation, and great circle sailing. The solution of the navigation triangle (section C) can be used for great circle course determination and for determining a location of the observer from astronomical observations. The study of angles and of the angular relationships of planar and three-dimensional figures is known as trigonometry. The trigonometric functions (also called the circular functions ) comprising trigonometry are the cosecant cosine cotangent secant ... sine , and tangent . The inverses of these functions are denoted , and . Note that the notation here means inverse function not f to the -1 power The trigonometric functions are most simply defined using the unit circle . Let be an angle measured counterclockwise from the x -axis along an arc of the circle . Then is the horizontal coordinate of the arc endpoint, and is the vertical component. The ratio is defined as . As a result of this definition, the trigonometric functions are periodic with period , so
where n is an integer and func is a trigonometric function. A right triangle has three sides, which can be uniquely identified as the hypotenuse , adjacent to a given angle , or opposite . A helpful mnemonic for remembering the definitions of the trigonometric functions is then given by "oh, ah, oh-ah,"
From the Pythagorean theorem
Therefore, it is also true that

SCORE Mathematics California's Mathematics Standards 8-12 TRIGONOMETRY Trigonometry uses the techniques that students have previously learned from the study of algebra and geometry. The trigonometric functions studied are defined geometrically rather than in terms of algebraic equations. Facility with these functions as well as the ability to prove basic identities regarding them is especially important for students intending to study calculus, more advanced mathematics, physics and other sciences, and engineering in college. Students understand the notion of angle and how to measure it, in both degrees and radians. They can convert between degrees and radians. Noon Project Revisited Students know the definition of sine and cosine as y- and x- coordinates of points on the unit circle and are familiar with the graphs of the sine and cosine functions. Students know the identity cos x ) + sin x 3.1 Students prove that this identity is equivalent to the Pythagorean theorem (i.e., students can prove this identity by using the Pythagorean theorem and, conversely, they can prove the Pythagorean theorem as a consequence of this identity). 3.2 Students prove other trigonometric identities and simplify others by using the identity cos

Thabit ibn Qurra was a native of Harran and a member of the Sabian sect. The Sabian religious sect were star worshippers from Harran often confused with the Mandaeans (as they are in [1]). Of course being worshipers of the stars meant that there was strong motivation for the study of astronomy and the sect produced many quality astronomers and mathematicians. The sect, with strong Greek connections, had in earlier times adopted Greek culture, and it was common for members to speak Greek although after the conquest of the Sabians by Islam, they became Arabic speakers. There was another language spoken in southeastern Turkey, namely Syriac, which was based on the East Aramaic dialect of Edessa. This language was Thabit ibn Qurra's native language, but he was fluent in both Greek and Arabic. Some accounts say that Thabit was a money changer as a young man. This is quite possible but some historians do not agree. Certainly he inherited a large family fortune and must have come from a family of high standing in the community.

I have now completed a three year degree in political studies, and am graduating with distinction. Since starting university, I've wondered whether I can still call myself a homeschooler, or whether homeschooling ends when one "graduates from highschool". I'm now convinced that homeschooling doesn't end. It can - and should - be a lifestyle. Reading, studying, learning, questioning, challenging are going to be part of my life forever, I hope. I create this homeschooling section of my webpage with the hope of inspiring and encouraging other homeschoolers. Journal entries...
