Hong Kong nanotechnology researchers think small
From... by Stephen Lawson (IDG) Nanotechnology researchers at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are creating some microscopic, ultra-thin, super-narrow and otherwise shrimpy things that may have big implications for information technology. Among the diminutive discoveries coming out of the physics department alone at HKUST are tubes just a few molecules wide, a microwave-absorbing sheet thinner than paper and a clutch that can stop and start a micro-motor without the need for tiny gears. These breakthroughs could make flat-panel displays cheaper, cell phones safer and microdrives more reliable, the researchers said in an interview Friday. Nanotechnology is the study of devices that measure less than a nanometer, or one billionth of a meter. For the sake of comparison, a typical human hair is 30,000 nanometers wide. Nanotechnology has been touted most often as the key to coming breakthroughs in medicine and robotics. However, the HKUST researchers envision some of their work being commercialized in IT hardware. Sciences Thinktank predicts nanotechnology backlash

There is a growing backlash against the rapidly emerging field of nanotechnology that could see a rerun of clashes over genetically modified crops, experts at one of the world's leading medical ethics thinktanks warned today. In a paper published in the Institute of Physics journal Nanotechnology, Canadian researchers, from the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB), claim that although the research into extremely small devices is still in its early stages and most applications may be decades away, it is already arousing alarm about people's privacy and security. Hailed as the first major scientific revolution of the 21st century, nanotechnology will make possible invisible microphones, cameras and tracking devices. And although it holds out hope of cheap, pollution-free production, little has been done to assess possible impacts on the environment when nano-materials are released.

With scientists and activist groups on a collision course over the rapidly emerging field of nanotechnology, experts at one of the world's leading medical ethics think-tanks warn that the coming confrontation could derail the first major scientific revolution of the 21st Century. In a paper published today in the Institute of Physics journal Nanotechnology , Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) claim that although the research is still in its early stages and most applications may be decades away, the backlash against the new technology is already gathering momentum. Once the stuff of science fiction, nanotechnology is the process of building working devices, systems and materials molecule by molecule by controlling matter measured in billionths of a metre. More importantly, it is about exploiting the unique and powerful electrical, physical and chemical properties found at that amazingly small scale.

Although Richard Feynman receives much of the credit for having first broached the concept of nanotechnology in his 1959 "There’s plenty of room at the bottom" lecture ( http://www.zyvex.com/nanotech/feynman.html ) to the American Physical Society, Eric Drexler was the first person to create theoretical designs for nanoscale components and determine some of the operationing principles of the nanoworld. In 1986 he helped to found the non-profit Foresight Institute. Their web site has detailed information for both general and technical audiences as well as community-based arenas on jobs and conferences, and special topics such as the risk of catastrophic release of nanotechnological machines. The nanoscale physics group uses various experimental techniques to examine the physical properties of objects in the nanoscale size range, that is, a little bit larger than the size of atoms. Some interesting physical properties at this range include conductivity of small numbers of atoms and molecules, forces arising between objects on this scale, and the transition between the quantum nature of a few atoms and a large number of atoms.

nanostructures
General
The activity of the group is in the basic and applied research in the rapidly growing field of the physics of nanostructures, and in nanofabrication methods. In particular we are interested in electrical and thermal transport properties on the sub-micron scale. Besides being very fascinating physics, this research serves a few other important goals:
  • It provides students with experience in the area of physics and technology, which is interesting to industry as well; it also leads to the development of nanofabrication methods, which are or will be used in the semiconductor industry. It provides elegant sensors, which are very small and whose working principles are of quantum mechanical origin. In the experiments we already probe the physical limitations which the industry will soon face when reducing the linewidth of conductors.
  • Our modern nanofabrication laboratory and electrically shielded rooms, with cryostats of sub-100 mK base temperatures, allow us both to fabricate samples and to make efficient in-house measurements.

    Micron-Sized Powders and Nanophase Materials
    Micrometer- and nanometer-sized powders have many applications in industry. Their structural, chemical, and electrical properties are related and need to be determined in order to make use of these powders. In collaboration with research groups at Asea Brown Bovery (ABB) corporation and the Argonne National Laboratory we studied powders of metals as well as combustion related materials, using Repeated-Contact Electrification, STM, STS, inelastic electron tunneling, AFM, and XPS.
