Nanotechnology Back to Last Page Full Glossary Definition: The development and use of devices that have a size of only a few nanometres. Research has been carried out into very small components, many of which depend on electronic effects like the Pauli Exclusion Principle and may involve movement of a very small number of electrons in their action. Such devices would act faster than larger components. Considerable interest has been shown in the production of structures on a molecular level by suitable sequences of chemical reactions or lithographic techniques. It is also possible to manipulate individual atoms on surfaces using a variant of the atomic force microscope to make, for example, high density data storage devices. Also Known As: Nano Machines, micromachines, micro machines.

Nanowires
Microscopic contacts which form spontaneously between two pieces of metal which touch have been shown to exhibit conductance quantization under a wide variety of conditions. Recently, it has been shown that the mechanical properties of such metallic "nanowires" also exhibit interesting quantum-size effects, which are correlated with their electrical properties. In order to describe electrical and mechanical properties of nanoscopic metallic systems within a single theoretical framework, we have developed a scattering approach to nanomechanics . A simple picture of metallic nanocohesion in which conductance channels act as delocalized chemical bonds is derived in the jellium approximation. Universal mesoscopic oscillations of the cohesive force of order 1nN are predicted when a metallic quantum wire is stretched to the breaking point, which are synchronized with quantized jumps in the conductance. These predictions are in quantitative agreement with the

http://mdp2.phys.ucl.ac.uk/MSciSite/Courses/4502.html
Lecturer: Prof. J. Saunders and Prof. V. Petrashov Lecturers Comments: The helium liquids, with the possible exception of cooled dilute gases of alkali atoms, provide the simplest examples of correlated bose and fermi systems. As such they provide models for condensed matter systems and they exhibit a rich variety of phenomena. Many theoretical ideas developed in the context of liquid helium have been applied elsewhere. In addition the relative simplicity of helium has meant that theoretical ideas can be clearly tested experimentally. Such clarity in the link between experiment and theory is not always apparent in condensed matter physics and makes this area of physics a valuable source of insight into scientific methodology.
Syllabus
  • Introduction and review of quantum statistics
The behaviour of bose and fermi gases.
  • Superfluid He and Bose-Einstein condensation
Phase diagram. Properties of superfluid He. Bose-Einstein condensation in He and dilute alkali metals. The two-fluid model and superfluid hydrodynamics. Elementary excitations of superfluid He. Breakdown of superfluidity. Quantization of circulation and quantized vortices.

Program of Study
The program is administered by the Rice Quantum Institute (RQI), which currently has 58 faculty fellows and approximately 148 graduate students pursuing degrees within the Applied Physics Program or within one of the traditional departmental disciplines. RQI is internationally known as a center for nanoscale molecular science and has world-class research programs in nanotechnology; atomic, molecular and optical physics; studies of clusters; the physics and chemistry of surfaces; laser development and applications, etc. A significant number of the Applied Physics students participate in the nanotechnology initiative at Rice, directed toward development and understanding of molecular-scale structures that have some degree of functionality. This initiative is embodied in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), which originated from research by members of RQI.
Graduate Courses
Successful completion of nine one-semester graduate-level courses is required for the Master's Degree in Applied Physics. For students who demonstrate a thorough knowledge of material, the Applied Physics Committee may waive some course requirements. Students are normally expected to complete the course requirements in three semesters and maintain a grade point average of 3.0. There are

Da Hsuan Feng
University of Texas, Dallas Dr. Da Hsuan Feng is the Vice President for Research and Graduate Education and Professor of Physics of the University of Texas at Dallas. His portfolio at the University of Texas at Dallas, as designated by the President and the Provost, is to rapidly ramp up the research breath and depth of the university, which will usher the university to be the third major international research university in the State of Texas. To this end, Feng has articulated three concentrations of excellence for the university in this decade: digital communications, advanced materials and instrumentations and last but not least, disease-centric post genomic research. Prior to joining the Physics Department of Drexel University in 1976, where he eventually became the M. Russell Wehr Chair Professor of Physics, he was a United Kingdom Science Research Council fellow at the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Manchester and a Senior Scientist at the Center for Nuclear Studies of the University of Texas at Austin. During his tenure at Drexel University, he also served for two years as Program Director of Theoretical Physics at the National Science Foundation and visiting Professor of the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen. Currently he holds the Honorary Professor/Senior Research Fellow of six universities/academy of sciences in China.

Nanotech Introduction Physics History FAQ ... Tomorrow Nanotech Physics So the research which is taking place now is centering on finding a way to influence self-assembly down to the interaction of individual molecules to control the way structures are formed.
So once we understand all the physics, why is nanotechnology a topic worthy of so much attention? One area looking to reap the future benefits of nanotechnology is the U.S. army. Nanotechnology is expected to play a major role in the development of a new generation of army uniforms and equipment. By changing the properties of materials through the introduction of tiny nanoparticle reinforcements into polymers, nanotechnology will enable advances such as making helmets 40-60% lighter and creating fabric which is able to repair itself when it rips. Chemically protective overgarments, which serve to shield soldiers against hazardous deadly micro-organisms and chemicals, will embark upon a new phase of development. New uniforms will be breathable and 20% lighter in weight than the standard battle-dress overgarment.
