Native Americans: Library Resources
Return to Library Guides SCOPE This guide is an introduction to Native American resources available at the Cofrin Library and is by no means comprehensive. For the purpose of this guide, Native American, also called Amerindian Amerind , or Indian , refers to any member of the aboriginal peoples of North America. This guide has been created to assist students taking courses regarding American and Wisconsin Indians, and thus the focus is on Native Americans in the United States. This guide is available in paper and online at http://www.uwgb.edu/library/guides/native.html . With the online version you can directly connect to any sources that have an Internet address (http://....).
SEARCHING THE LIBRARY CATALOG For subject search, type Indians of North America . This subject can be narrowed by adding a subheading or a geographic area. You can also do a subject search for a particular tribe (but you have to add the word Indians after the tribe name). Another option is to search by keyword, in which you do not have to match the subject heading exactly. In keyword searching you can combine words or phrases by using connecting words such as

Native Americans
Remember, you must use the specialized Native American periodical indexes or more general social sciences and humanities indexes to identify individual articles of interest. The current year of journals shelved in Green Library is normally found in the Current Periodicals. Bound volumes are shelved in the Stack by call number. There is a guide for finding periodicals in the library. Many Native American periodicals particulary earlier runs before 1980 are on microfilm (in the Green Library Media and Microtext Room). There is an alphabetical listing of many of the titles . This list, however, is not exhaustive; check Socrates using the "Browse Periodical Title" search. Some Native American newspapers are now fulltext on the web
Older material dealing with Native Americans will be found in a number of places, but one of the major areas of concentration is in the Dewey 970s located in the Auxiliary Library , e.g.:
  • Champlain Society. Publications
  • Contributions to North American Ethnology , vols. 1-9. 970.1.U58G.
