Native American Cultures Expedition: WebQuest
Indian people are still here. We are not going away. It is time that the newcomers to this country started paying proper respect to the elder status of the first nations. - Otis Halfmoon (Nez Perce) Introduction Many misunderstandings and stereotypes exist about American Indians, or Native Americans. Not all Indians lived in tepees, and not all Indians were mainly hunters who used bows and arrows. There were hundreds of Indian nations across North America with many different cultures. They spoke different languages, had their own stories and religious ideas, and made their living in varied ways. Today, many Indian people work to keep their cultural heritage as they live in the modern world. Some Indian people live with other members of their nations on reservations, while others live in our towns and cities among people of various ethnic backgrounds. As you participate in this expedition, including this WebQuest, you will become an expert on one Indian nation and share your knowledge not only with your teacher and classmates, but also with our guests who attend our cultural fair.

    • Mohawk (Iroquois)
The Iroquois League, or Five Nations of the Iroquois, was the most powerful Indian military alliance in the eastern part of North America and probably the most successful alliance of any kind between so many important tribes. There were three principal clans - deer, turtle and wolf - existing within the five nations, and this was probably an important unifying factor in the league. The league was formed in the late sixteenth century at which time the five nations had a combined population of 7000.
    • Mohican (Mohegan) and/or Mahican
What a confusion of facts. After reading through several texts and visiting many sites on the web, it has become clear as mud that everyone has a differing opinion about the relationships between these three tribes. We will therefore include them all on one page and maybe through your wanderings, you will discover the truth. If you do, please let us in on it.
    • Creek
The Creek were originally one of the dominant tribes in the mid-south and later became known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes. They were known in their own language as Muskoke or Muskoge, by the Shawnee as Humaskogi, by the Delaware as Masquachki and by the British as the Ochese Creek Indians, hence the present name. Their name has been adapted for that of their linguistic group and for Muskogee, Oklahoma, which was a major city of the Creek Nation in Indian territory.

Reality of Native Nations and Tribal Websites
N ative Nations in the U.S. and Canada are recognized (often only after considerable struggles and litigation) as indigenous nations with a measure of sovereignty. It is therefore necessary to distinguish between national websites prepared by or with acknowledgement of and responsibility to, these nations, and unofficial sites about history, culture or current events for a particular tribe. That distinction seems especially important on an educational "metasite" such as this one, whose users range from people totally naive about all of Native history to people deeply involved in actually making that history now. U nofficial, or volunteer, sites are often prepared by tribal people with access to a server through being college students, or through city jobs. They are also prepared by non-natives, professors, commercial enterprises (tourist agncies, art galleries) government agencies, Nuagers. These sites are often highly informative, beautiful, interesting. But they are about Native Nations, not
