Alliance places a high value on education with an excellent public school system, as well as an excellent elementary private school. Enrollment in the Alliance Public Schools is nearly 2,300 pupils. For continuing education needs, Western Nebraska Community College - Alliance Center and Chadron State College offer an associates, bachelors or masters degree with little lost time from work or home. The curriculum at Alliance Public Schools is designed to provide students with a continuous education patter, regardless of which school they attend. The strength of this effort rests on the comprehensive approach to reading, language, arts and mathematics. Computer labs networked into each classroom provide both the teachers and the students with state-of-the-art hardware and software programs. St. Agnes Academy is a private school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is sponsored by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and is open to all denominations. The quality continuing education in Alliance received a boost in 1999 with the completion of Alliance Learning Center. The center serves as home of the Alliance Public Library, Western Nebraska Community College and Chadron State College's distance learning program.

Keynote - Renaissance 2000: A Glimpse of the Future (repeated at 10:00) David Thornburg, Thornburg Institute for Professional Dev. The age of discovery and the Renaissance were triggered in part by a communications revolution: the development in Europe of the moveable type press. The explosion of information that led to an era of exploration and creativity pales in comparison with the revolution we experienced during the latter part of the Information age. The Web is the fastest growing communication technology in history. Based on historical precedent, this presentation explores why we are poised at the edge of an era of unprecedented creativity and exploration that will transform all aspects of work, education, and life. See tools that encourage the blending of art, science and math and that foster the creative revolution that might well transform education in the coming years. How the Internet Works - An Overview Ever wonder how the Internet came about? Learn the answer to that question and many more in this introductory session. You'll also learn the basics of networks and TCP/IP, routers, domains, and e-mail. No engineering degree needed here. Beginners welcome!
