The Virtual School List The Virtual School List includes only those entities which offer courses designed for K-12 learners and which offer at least some Internet- or Web-based credit courses . Using email, chat or support web sites (like many conventional college courses these days) isn't considered to constitute a "web-based course" in the context of this Virtual School List. Computer-based courses using CD-ROMs or software loaded on the student's computer for the main course delivery, another common method, is also not considered a "web-based course" application in this context. To suggest a new listing, go to the Virtual School Survey page. State-operated University-operated District-operated State charter schools ... Bellevue is home to Offutt Air Force Base and STRATCOM, and that is reflected in many parts of the community, including the school system. The community has the only Air Force Junior ROTC program in the state, which places a strong focus on technology, with computer labs for different academic areas.
The emphasis on technology is spreading throughout the system: all elementary schools in the district have computer labs.
Bellevue serves its 8,900 students with 12 elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. The district also has a CHAP School for the profoundly handicapped.
    Council Bluffs Community Schools
Council Bluffs Community Schools serve 10,200 students in 14 elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. The school district also has an alternative high school for students with special needs.

NEBRASKA Nebraska K-12 Social Studies Framework
The Nebraska Social Studies Framework project was designed to allow school districts, teachers, curriculum designers, and administrators to incorporate social studies concepts and content throughout the K-12 curriculum. As a result, the frameworks are not organized along subject headings. Instead a thematic approach was used to allow the widest possible scope for the implementation of the frameworks within the local curricula of each school and/or school district.
The ten themes are: Civic Ideals and Practices

New Wave of Graduate Students to Enrich K-12 Classrooms
A second wave of partnerships between universities and local K-12 school districts will form as graduate and advanced undergraduate students enter the classroom to teach their younger peers. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $30 million in 25 new grants under an innovative educational program enabling approximately 300 talented graduate and advanced undergraduate students in science, mathematics, engineering and technology to serve as teaching fellows in K-12 schools. The grants, from NSF's Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) program, will go to institutions in 19 states from Maine to California, as well as Puerto Rico. "Researchers need to bring their expertise and enthusiasm out of the laboratory and into the classroom," says Rita Colwell, NSF director. "The GK-12 program creates partnerships across the academic community that benefit research and education at every level."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 3, 2001 UNOmaha to Offer Graduate Certificate to Enhance Instruction in
    Urban Schools OMAHA
    - Teachers who work in urban school environments face a unique set of challenges. Beginning this fall, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNOmaha) will launch a graduate certificate program designed to help today's urban education professional meet these challenges. A proposal for a graduate certificate titled "Instruction in Urban Schools" was approved recently by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Pending approval by the state's Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary
Education later this summer, UNOmaha will begin enrolling students this fall. The certificate, which includes 18 hours of graduate coursework, was developed by faculty in the teacher education department in the UNOmaha College of Education. Courses will be taught by faculty in the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences at UNOmaha. "It's a response to needs expressed by local school districts," said John Christensen, dean of the UNOmaha College of Education. "The certificate will focus on the issues, content knowledge, and instructional practices
that teachers need to know to effectively facilitate learning in K-12 urban schools."

2002 Instructors and Participants The K-12 Science Teaching Institute at Nebraska Wesleyan University is made possible by a 2001-2004 grant from HHMI to provide an outreach program for Nebraska K-12 math (elementary-middle school) and science teachers from Class C and D schools. This is the third time (1993-1996, 1997-2000) NWU has received a four-year grant from HHMI to train teachers. Secondary science teachers are often the only science person in their high schooland sometimes even their junior high school. Out of necessity, these science teachers must teach certain science courses for which they have no endorsement to teach. This is also the case for elementary-middle school teachers in math and science consequently the training has been expanded from 7-12 to a K-12, Math, Science and Instructional Technology Institute. The primary focus of this outreach program is to assist participants by providing a better knowledge in math, science and technology and inexpensive hands-on tools (which they take home) and computer software for teaching math and science in order to increase student interest and understanding of interdisciplinary concepts and relationships. The participants and instructors will also form a network for sharing math, science and technology information through email and the HHMI web site.

    Nebraska News - The Legislature
No state aid cuts, no tax increases in Johanns plan Governor Targets Higher Ed to Save K-12 Schools
by John Fulwider October 23, 2001
LINCOLN - The University of Nebraska takes a $38.8 million bullet for K-12 education in Gov. Mike Johanns' proposal for addressing the state's $220 million budget shortfall. Gov. Mike Johanns. State financial aid to K-12 public schools, Medicaid assistance, and public-safety agencies are left alone in the governor's proposal to cut most parts of the state budget by 4 percent this fiscal year and 5 percent next fiscal year. Left exposed to the cuts is the university, which prior to Tuesday had been thanking Johanns and the Legislature for giving it a "historical" increase in spending money to use on increasing faculty salaries and other efforts to boost the institution's research and teaching quality. An NU lobbyist called it unfair for the university to shoulder so much of the budget-cutting burden, while acknowledging that NU's 2001-2003 budget would still show a 2.5 percent increase over its 1999-2001 budget.
