RITES OF PASSAGE: Would-be Gurkhas are scrutinized during a rigorous selection process.
Gurkhas to Go
The cream of Himalayan manhood still leaves the mountains to fight in foreign lands, for foreign flags

By MICHAEL FATHERS Beni A curious spectacle is taking place near the rapids of the Kaligandaki River in the western foothills of the Himalayas. Roughly 150 men between the ages of 17 and 22 have stripped to their underpants and are lining up for a physical fitness test. It's the first round of a grueling elimination that will end three months later when 230 of the thousands of aspirants are chosen for the world's most successful and perhaps most feared mercenary forcethe Gurkhas. Across the mountains of eastern and western Nepal, the annual recruiting season for Britain's 3,700-man Brigade of Gurkhas is in full swing. ALSO IN TIME Visions 21: The Way We Will Be In the first of a series, TIME offers glimpses (and guesses) of what the world will look like in the next century Indonesia: Too Many Cooks?

Religious ceremonies involve the use of drums and musical instruments preserved since ancient times. In rural areas devotional songs are an important part of cultural life. Radio Nepal schedules folk music programs to foster the traditional culture of the country. Newspapers and periodicals are published in Nepali and in English. Newspapers are frequently sensational in tone and are poorly staffed and financed. Gorkha Patra, published by the government, occupies a commanding position in the Nepalese press. Nepalese newspaper readers rely on the foreign press, particularly Indian newspapers, which are flown daily into Kathmandu, for more sophisticated coverage of world and national news.

http://www.mapzones.com/world/asia/nepal/historyindex.php
Country Info Nepal Introduction Nepal General Data Nepal Maps Nepal Culture ... Nepal Time and Date Nepal History Back to Top Although Nepal emerged in history in the first millennia bc, it was only in the 18th century that Nepal developed as a country of the present size. Archaeological remains suggest that areas of Nepal have been inhabited for more than 10,000 years. The Kirant hill tribe people are thought to be the first rulers of the Kathmandu area. The earliest undisputed Nepali dynasty is the Licchavi dynasty, which was established in about ad 400. The Licchavi dynasty, which probably migrated from present-day Vaishali, India, was centered in the Kathmandu Valley. The Licchavi dynasty expanded its influence to the Kali Gandaki River in the west and Sun Kosi River in the east. The Licchavi period, as well as the Malla period that followed, was deeply influenced by Indian culture. The Licchavi dynasty came to an end in the late 9th century and was followed by the medieval period. The early medieval era was unstable and poorly documented. It culminated in the Malla period (1200 to 1769) when three separate dynasties, divided into three kingdoms in the late 15th century, were conquered by the Shah dynasty in 1769, led by King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Nepal’s southward expansion under the Shah dynasty resulted in a clash with the English East India Company. The Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816) reduced the country to its current size, although Nepal retained its independence.

Clintons in Nepal
About Us
Our names are Bob and Bobbie Clinton. We're from the midwest in the USA. Bob was a public school district superintendent in Wisconsin until July 31, 1999. Bobbie had her own home-based business. Currently we're living in Kathmandu (Patan), Nepal. We're studying the Nepali language and culture. We hope to be able to use our education and skills to help the poor of Nepal have a better future.
UPDATE
Bob's is continuing to study Nepali with the help of tutors at L.O.P. He'll begin studying at Tribhuvan University in July. Bobbie has been studying with the help of a language tutor who comes to our home three days a week. Nepali is much easier than Chinese to learn since it doesn't have tones and it has an alphabet. We're both learning to speak and as well as write/read. We're better at sounding out written words than knowing their meanings. Our vocabulary continues to expand daily. We've been exposed to four verb tenses, which we're trying to learn, and can now use 13 different sentence structures.
We'll be enjoyed a visit from Bob's brother, Tom, a few days before Christmas. He'll returned to the states on Dec. 20. We'll showed him around Patan, Kathmandu and Pokhara and introduced him to our many new friends.
