Nepal - Religion dominates life
Your first impressions of Nepal might leave you speechless: the abundance of temples, monasteries, and other religious structures, the hustle-bustle in the streets around Durbar Marg in Kathmandu, the number of people and animals shovelling and squeezing through narrow lanes …
Start slowly! You cannot expect to comprehend a development of hundreds of years, evident in different ethnic groups and religions, that are most virulent in a country bordering India, China and Tibet, within just a few days.
Let one of my local guides help you to dissolve this confusion. Start off in Kathmandu's Durbar Marg and listen to the guide's explanations. Or you begin at the Old Royal Palace , where a statue of Hanuman, the monkey god, is guarding the entrance. You will find Hanuman statues guarding many important entrances during you visit in Nepal.
Around 20 or more Temples and religious structures are waiting for you only in this neighbourhood. Most vividly I remember the Kumari Bahal , a place where the Living Goddess resides. Learn more about this custom and the

Understanding a little of Nepal's culture and life will help you some. Nepalis don't really have a weekend. But many business and government offices are closed part or all of the day on Friday and Saturday. Government offices are generally open from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays they usually remain open until 3 pm. Most stores and shops open sometime after 10 am and close at about 8 pm, but are usually closed on Saturday. Banks are open from Sunday through Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm. On Fridays, most banks close at noon.

Scholarship Student Brings Nepal's Culture to West Virginia
Timely through August 15 Contact: Richard Fleisher (304) 293-2694 Editor's Note: Below is your post-appearance article. Use this announcement article after Shyam (Sam) Babu Joshi's visit to your community. Please fill in the blanks with information appropriate for your community. Day/Date Shyam (Sam) Babu Joshi, a native of Nepal, encountered a drastically different culture than his own when he came to the West Virginia University campus about a year ago. This summer, the West Virginia Community Educational Outreach Service's (WVCEOS) International Student Scholarship recipient is informing the residents across the state about the culture of his native country, Nepal. From May to August, Joshi is traveling the state visiting WVCEOS groups and demonstrating what his culture and family life are like, as part of his agreement as a scholarship recipient. He is visiting six geographic regions for approximately 12 days each this summer. He is staying with two to three host families in each area. The scholarship provides $3,500 and a tuition waiver for the 2000-2001 academic year, which may be renewed for another year. The recipient must be enrolled in a human service-related field.

Nepal's Culture Cultural Considerations in Nepal
Nepal represents a culture far older and in many ways more sophisticated than Western culture, but you are not visiting a museum. Rather, you are visiting a country that is vibrantly alive, where many people live more comfortably and in many cases more happily than in the West. The more you listen and observe, the more you will learn and the more people will accept you. If you must try to teach Nepali hill people something, try teaching them English. English is a key to upward mobility for employment in, or the running of, any business which deals with foreigners. This is one element of Western culture that everyone desires the English language. Spending your time conversing with a guide or porter in English as you stroll the trail together will be a good start toward a lasting friendship.
When trekking you will have a chance to meet and become acquainted with Sherpas (like me) and members of other Nepali ethnic groups. The background of these people is completely different from what you are familiar with in the West. Treks are a fascinating cultural experience, but are most rewarding when you make some concessions to the customs and habits of Nepal. Nepali people are traditionally warm and friendly and treat foreigners with a mixture of curiosity and respect. "Namaste" ("hello, how are you?") is a universal greeting. Most Nepali people speak at least some English, though smiles and gestures work well where language is a barrier.

Photos from Nepal. Pictures of the temples of Kathmandu and the mountains of the Himalaya near Mount Everest... HOME for more destinations Mountains and temples Nepal is a country of stark geographical and cultural diversity. The historical center of Nepal is the Kathmandu Valley where two of the world's great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, mingle in jumbled and busy towns. In dramatic contrast to the valleys and plains are the high mountains of the Himalaya that rise in the north of Nepal. Despite an inhospitable landscape of towering icy peaks, the Nepal Himalaya harbors remote Buddhist shrines and monasteries. These are revered by people who live by their culture and faiths in this harsh but pious region. Swayambhunath Buddhist Stupa near Kathmandu The Kathmandu Valley Nepal is a very spiritual country where Hinduism and Buddhism have become intermingled in a way that is often impossible for the visitor to understand. The old parts of the towns of the Kathmandu Valley are packed with extraordinary temples and shrines that reflect this complex system of religious beliefs. The major towns of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan were once separate competing city-states ruled by Malla kings. The time-worn temples and shrines of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, like these in Bhaktapur, are infused with detail and symbolic meaning.

"Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP)" -Mtn-Forum On-Line Library Document
WHAT is KEEP? The Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP), a registered non-governmental organization, provides cultural and environmental information to travelers. The project aims to help minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive aspects of tourism on the environment and culture of Nepal. WHY is KEEP needed? Tourism is an essential component of Nepal's economy. The trekking opportunities in the Himalayas are attracting growing numbers of tourists each year, bringing economic benefits at all levels. However, the fragile environment of the Himalayas is under serious threat from the impact of tourism. WHO is KEEP for? Many travelers to Nepal are ill-prepared, uninformed, and unaware of their potential to damage the local culture and environment. Visitors must be sensitized to issues of conservation and encouraged to adopt the ethics of minimum impact as they plan their travels. Likewise, people working in the tourism sector are not necessarily aware of the long-range effects which their business practices will have on the environment and culture of the Himalayan range. Not only does KEEP assist and encourage visitors, provide free information to those who are unfamiliar with the geography and culture of Nepal, and offer training to trekking professionals so that they may be better qualified to provide the kinds of services which conscientious travelers are increasingly requiring, but the sum of all these activities is the preservation of Nepal's culture, environment, and tourism industry. While focused on the tourist, KEEP's ultimate aim is to benefit local people.
