History and Government
History: Nepal was created from an amalgam of small principalities in 1768 under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Under the control of a hereditary king, Nepal then became a 'buffer state' between the British empire and the territories to the north. The main instrument of British rule from the mid-19th century onwards was a hereditary prime minister drawn from the Rana family. The country became formally independent in 1923, but it was not until 1947 (the year of Indian independence) and the total withdrawal of the British from the region that Nepal achieved genuine independence. In 1951, the Ranas, who were still in power, were overthrown in a coup organised by the Nepali Congress, and a hereditary monarchy was restored under King Tribhuvan.
Four years later he was succeeded by his son, King Mahendra. In 1959 Mahendra established a parliamentary constitution, and the ensuing elections were won by the Nepali Congress (led by B P Koirala) which had played a key role in the re-establishment of the monarchy. A year later, however, a royal coup led to the banning of all political parties and the establishment of a constitution based on the traditional village councils (the Panchayat system). Mahendra ruled until his death in 1972 when he was succeeded by his son Birendra.
Birendra persevered with the Panchayat system, bolstered initially by the result of a referendum which gave a narrow majority in favour of its continued use. In the face of substantial and growing opposition, which increased steadily throughout the 1980s, Birendra resorted to a mix of repression, censorship and cosmetic administrative reforms to defuse the situation. In 1986, a member of the minority Newari community, Marich Man Singh Shrestha, became Prime Minister for the first time. Then, in 1990, growing public unrest forced the King to accept political parties and introduce a draft constitution allowing for direct elections to a bicameral parliament.

History of Nepal Lichavi Dynasty The Lichavis are said to have migrated into Nepal from north India in around 250 A.D. The first Lichavi king of historical importance was Manadeva 1. Another important Lichavi monarch was Anshuverma who opened trade routes to Tibet. One of his daughters, Bhrikuti, who was married to Tibetan ruler Tsrong-tsong Gompo, was instrumental in spreading the Gospel of the Buddha in Tibet and China. Anshuverma has been referred to as a man of many talents in the accounts of the Chinese traveler Huen Tsang, who had visited India in the 7th century AD. Narendradeval another Lichavi king, initiated friendly relations with China and his successors laid the foundations of friendship with India by entering into matrimonial alliances with the Indian royal families. The Lichchhavi rule spanned over a period of about 630 years, the last ruler being Jayakamadeva. Malla Dynasty After the fall of the Lichchhavis came the Malla period during which the foundation of the city of Kantipur (later Kathmandu) was laid. The early Malla rule started with Ari Malla in the 12th century and over the next two centuries grew into a large empire before disintegrating into small principalities which later became known as the Baisi (i.e. the twenty-two principalities). This was more or less coincidental with the emergence of the Chaubisi (i.e. twenty-four principalities). The history of these principalities remains shrouded up until the time when they joined other kingdoms, both large and small, to form the unified Kingdom of Nepal.

General Info Places of Interest History Shopping ... Nepal History History Religion Festivals Nepal's history can be traced back to the Kiratis a Mongoloid people, who arrived in the 7th or 8th century BC from the east. Very little is known about them, apart from the fact that they were the first rulers of the Kathmandu Valley. Nepal is a land of Buddha and it was during this period that Buddhism first came to the country and stayed for a while in Patan. By the 4th cent. A.D. Buddhism was replaced by Hinduism, brought by the Licchavis, who invaded from northern India and overthrew the last Kirati king. The Hindus brought with them the caste system which still prevails. By 879, the Licchavi era had ended and was succeeded by the Thakuri dynasty. The Thakuri's first king, Arideva, founded the Malla dynasty.
Although the centuries that followed were politically troubled, the very location of the Kathmandu Valley ensured its survival and growth.

History Nepal's precarious position between two of the world's political giants-India and China-has dictated its history for centuries. The early history of Nepal is inextricably interwoven with Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and consequently it is often difficult to discern what is historical fact and what is myth. Reality or Myth? There is evidence that as early as 700 B.C., people were living in the Kathmandu Valley. The two Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata both mention the Kirantis, who lived in the mountains north of India-an area that coincides with the Kathmandu Valley. A fifth-century inscription at Changu Narayan, a remote and little-visited, though fascinating, temple in the Kathmandu Valley, indicates that the Kiranti dynasty lasted from the eighth century B.C. to the third century A.D. The Kirantis may themselves have been descendants of an even older dynasty, the Ahirs, shepherds who supposedly were the first rulers of the Kathmandu Valley. Over the centuries, there were successive migrations into the mountains by refugees, nomads, and conquering armies from Tibet, India, and even Central Asia. Both the Ahirs and the Kirantis are likely to have migrated into the mountains as well. The Enlightened One

The art of weaving is an old tradition in the Kingdom of Nepal, especially in the mountainous region of the country. Radii, Pakhi, Bakkhu, Darhi (with pile) are well-known Nepalese products produced in these regions using indigenous wool. The marketing of these products was confined to the domestic market. The Nepalese- Tibetan carpets contain a very high degree of hand processing and qualities ranging from 60-150 knots per square inch. Regularity safe guards are in place to ensure that only highest quality fleece wool is imported for use in these carpets. At present, 95 percent of the production of carpet is concentrated in the Kathmandu valley with the remaining 5 percent is spreading over a number of other districts of the country.
