The Word
DUTCH
A Brief Introduction to the Language

Some famous Dutch People. Past and Present
...
My Rutger Hauer Collection

THE WORD 'DUTCH' The word Dutch should not be confused with German Deutsch Dutch means something like 'from the Netherlands' (in a dictionary definition). A 'Dutchman/ woman' is an inhabitant of the Netherlands. Deutsch , on the other hand, is German and means... German ! Consider 'Dutch' a mistake of the English language; however, the word 'Diets(en)' is still used in the national anthem (thank you to Jos Blij). Wouldn't it be more correct to use the words Netherlander and Netherlandic/ Netherlandish ? That might be an interesting discussion. I once had an American colleague who called me 'Lowlander': a great alternative! If you want to know more about the Dutch people, you should read The UnDutchables by Colin White and Laurie Boucke. Some of the information may have been a little exaggerated, but it sure gives an amusing and complete impression of the Lowlanders.

Formerly known as the Dutch West Indies and Netherlands West Indies, they are divided into two groups. Lying off Venezuela are Bonaire and ; in the Leeward Islands, east of Puerto Rico, are Saba St. Eustatius , and the southern half of Saint Martin Willemstad The majority of the people are Christian and have a mixed African background. The official language of the Netherlands Antilles is Dutch, but Papiamento (a Spanish-Portuguese-Dutch-English dialect) is the predominant tongue. English and Spanish are also spoken. The economy is dependent on tourism, the refining and transshipment of Venezuelan petroleum, and offshore finance. The Netherlands Antilles have a higher per capita income and a more developed infrastructure than other nearby countries. Poor soil and scanty water resources hamper agricultural production, which is largely limited to aloes, sorghum, peanuts, fruits, and vegetables. There is also some light manufacturing.

This dormant volcano was attractive to travelers even of long ago. Receiving more than 100 cm of annual rainfall, Arawak and Carib Indians were lured to Saba as a source for fresh water and rich volcanic soil. Until the Summer of 2001, it was believed that Saba's first settlers were Arawak Indians around 700 A.D.
