The Shriner's Zelzah Temple Transportation Fund is the recipient of a portion of the profits from the Lance Burton Magic Shop. The funds go to buy 15-seat vans equipped with wheelchair lifts to take physically disabled children for help at the Shriner's Hospital in Los Angeles. Lance Burton also performs at the annual Shriner's Christmas party. Lance Burton's main charities are directed toward children. The donations from the taping of his NBC specials go to these charities. Aside from children's charities, Lance hosts an annual concert for The Animal Foundation. If you have a burned or crippled child, please call 1-800-237-5055, Shriner's may be able to help. He is also a celebrity member of Variety Club Tent 39 and donates to their cause of helping children with special needs. The Variety Club of Southern Nevada, Tent 39 is an active member of Variety Club International. The poll, being released Monday by the advocacy group Public Agenda, suggests parents feel that while teachers care and school personnel are qualified to deal with disabilities, school systems don't offer special help to children unless families insist. Ann Duffett, an author of the study, said parents have a different perspective from policy-makers.

The pilot Wimberly Projects are located in Charlotte, Memphis, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, and Maryland. There are also two incubator projects located in Iowa and Texas. Chapters of The 100 in these locations are working closely with school district administration, with faculty and staff at school sites, parents, and have reached out to involve a variety of local resources, including colleges and universities, parent training and information centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, collegiate chapters of The 100, churches, services agencies, and community organizations. Although each of these dynamic projects is unique, all focus on students’ academic progress, behavior, attendance, and on improving young Black males’ lifestyles, outlooks, and confidence in their futures. Because many additional chapters have become interested in developing Wimberly Projects, a guide on replicating the first six projects, or their components, will be distributed in 2002. Whether just getting started with technology in the classroom or in creating innovative data systems to manage an entire school district — learners, teachers, administrators, parents and community members will benefit from the innovative delivery system and quality network of service providers in our Consortium. The WestEd RTEC and our Partnership Network resources will be used to target the lowest-performing 1000 schools in California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, profile their reform needs, and coordinate the delivery of the best educational technology resources that match their needs. We have outlined four initiatives and eight strands of work, each designed to address the findings of current research, to respond to the recent results of several statewide and regional needs assessments, and to meet the mandates in the RTEC legislation. The four initiatives are: Getting Connected: This initiative focuses on increasing access to technology's benefits for disadvantaged and disabled learners in the region, including access to computers, the Internet, and ongoing support for students, their families, teachers, administrators, and community members.
