NEVADA DRINKING WATER EDUCATION AND TRAINING NETWORK BACKGROUND The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), first passed in 1974, establishes the basic requirements under which the nation's public water supplies are regulated. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for setting the national drinking water regulations to carry out the requirements of the Act, and the states are responsible for ensuring that the public water systems under their jurisdiction are complying with the regulation. There is little argument that public education in America needs a makeover. The educational establishment and teacher unions have held a monopoly over low-income families for decades. Educrats have worked overtime to block voucher and school choice programs in communities all over the country. Business people like Forstmann and John Walton, heir to Wal-Mart, have had enough of the gridlock. They are working with other private donors to give families a choice. They are helping schools and students, one voucher at a time. Privately funded school-choice programs number over 30 today. Each works to provide financial assistance to low-income children for education in private or parochial schools. The average annual income of participating families is $18,000. Milwaukee’s PAVE program leads the pack, serving over 4,600 children. Programs in San Antonio, Los Angeles, New York and Indianapolis are slightly smaller, serving one or two thousand students. Many others serve from 30 to several hundred. Forstmann’s Children’s Scholarship Fund is the first to target local partners in cities all over the United States. Compliance Compliance A critical component of the overall mission of the University of Nevada Intercollegiate Athletics programs is a strong commitment to rules compliance as established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and the University of Nevada. Nevada will comply with the rules and regulations of those organizations in the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics programs. Our program educates and monitors staff, coaches, student-athletes and representatives of athletics interests to assure compliance. At Nevada, compliance oversight is accomplished via the Athletic Director, a compliance team, and a designated Coordinator of Compliance. To maintain a system of checks and balances, two members of the compliance team's four-person executive committee have reporting lines directly to the University's President. The Coordinator of Compliance handles the majority of the daily compliance functions, with the compliance team reviewing those functions and focusing on education and strategic planning. The Athletic Director has the responsibility for the conduct of Nevada's Intercollegiate Athletics program. The Compliance Team is made up of eight members, including the Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women Administrator (SWA), Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services, Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), Coordinator of Compliance, Associate Director of Admissions and Records, Director of Student Financial Services, Manager of Student Accounts in the Controller's Office, and the Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board.
